Focusing on outcomes and methods in removable prosthodontics trials: a systematic review

Abstract: Although published RCTs in removable prosthodontics have increased over time, efforts should be made to increase patient-reported outcomes and the methodological quality of these reports. Such improvement will lead to a better body of evidence in the field, thus providing increased support for clinical decision-making.

“…Each parameter of trial methodological quality was graded as ‘adequate’, ‘inadequate’, ‘unclear’ or ‘not applicable’ (de Souza et al . ). Studies were defined as low risk of bias if the five criteria listed above were clearly met in the study.…”

“…This result is aligned with the previous research, which suggests that chewing ability is the most important factor in denture satisfaction. Over the last decade, there has been an emphasis on the use of patient‐based measures and outcomes in prosthodontics research . However, the majority of the published studies examined patient satisfaction with complete dentures, among patients with a range of experience and wearing dentures of various ages, but not in the cohort of experienced denture wearers with old dentures.…”

“…In recent years there has been a shift to patient‐based measures, as better methods for measuring patient‐centered outcomes have been developed . Moreover, according to a recent systematic review, patient satisfaction has been used as the primary outcome for the majority of removable prosthodontic clinical trials . Furthermore, use of patient satisfaction as an outcome can facilitate the transfer of knowledge from research to clinical use; however, there is still no valid guideline for clinicians on the use of expert‐ and patient‐based measures as prognostic tools for estimation of patient satisfaction with dentures .…”

“…Main PRO used for edentulous patients include6: (1) satisfaction with received prostheses, often reported according to items regarding retention, esthetics, and oral hygiene7; (2) masticatory ability8; and (3) OHRQoL, which can provide a broader appraisal of the impact of oral health on function and well-being 9. Those PRO are generally evaluated by questionnaires whose items are answered according to visual analogue scales (VAS)78 or ordinal/Likert scales 9.…”

“…This might be critical for edentulous patients, who tend to be older and frequently present low instructional levels 17. Such characteristics can influence the performance of computer-based forms; moreover, previous studies about the electronic application of PRO enrolled younger and more instructed participants,111213141516 in contrast to randomized trials on the treatment for edentulism 6…”
