Fluoride varnish containing chitosan demonstrated sustained fluoride release

Abstract: Fluoride varnish is a professionally applied product that prevents dental caries. However, fluoride varnishes do not provide sustained fluoride release. The objective of this study was to prepare fluoride varnish formulations containing various amounts of chitosan that would generate sustained fluoride release. We evaluated their chemical structure, viscosity, and in vitro fluoride release. Furthermore, the 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazolyl-2)-2,5diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and direct contact test were use… Show more

“…The chitosan nanoparticles had no interaction with the rosins utilized in the mouthwash. [94] -tricalcium phosphate nanoparticles functionalized with fluoride has been shown to be more effective than the traditional fluoride ion solution in remineralizin dentin. [95] Bioactive glass (Bioglass) is a synthesized glass composition with controlled degradation that has demonstrated successful results in bone and tooth tissue engineering.…”

“…The prevention and treatment of erosive tooth wear are becoming increasingly important due to its increasing prevalence. The research and development of new biocompatible compounds or association of materials in compositions containing fluoride are necessary to prevent and/or reduce the development or progression of dental erosion (Beltrame et al, 2018; de Souza et al, 2021; Pichaiaukrit, Thamrongananskul, Siralertmukul, & Swasdison, 2019; Salas et al, 2017; Souza, Machado, Vecchia, & Magalhães, 2020; Ururahy et al, 2017).…”

“…Moreover, the number of colonies was inversely proportional to the mouthwash concentration [ 93 ]. Nano-CS containing fluoride ions is added to mouthwash water, so that fluoride ions can be slowly released onto the surface of demineralized tooth tissue for extended periods, to promote remineralization [ 94 ]. Small-sized nano-CS (1−100 nm) is highly reactive, with better ionic exchange than that of large-sized nano-CS, to form fluorapatite with better acid-resisting ability [ 18 , 95 ].…”
