Flowering period and fruit quality of peach trees selections and cultivars in the metropolitan region of Curitiba

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the flowering period and the physicochemical characteristics of peaches, aiming to find those most promising for the diversification of the peach crop in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, Paraná State. We evaluated 8 selections and three cultivars in Porto Amazonas and 10 cultivars in Araucaria for flowering period, fruit set, diameter and height of fruit, average fruit weight, the skin color, soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA), ratio SS/ TA, hydrogen potential (pH). T… Show more

“…These values of minimum air temperature were lower than those observed in Jarinu (15.3 °C). At the other hand, the values of maximum air temperatures observed in Alves et al (2018) were higher than those presented in this study (27.0 °C). The difference of air temperature conditions may justify the difference between the harvest seasons in these two locations.…”

“…The harvest season ranging from September 06 th to October 12 th (Figure 1). Alves et al (2018) related the Tropic Beauty's harvest period ranging from October 30 th to November 05 th in Araucária (25°35′15″ S; 49°24′18″ W; 897 m a.s.l. ), Brazil, later than the present study.…”

“…When grown in Araucária, Paraná, the fruits of the Douradão and Rubimel cultivars showed a better balance between SS and moderate acidity, and matured earlier than those produced by Charme and Chimarrita (Alves et al, 2018). The fruits of the cultivars Coral and Rubimel showed a better balance between SS and TA when grown in Viçosa, Minas Gerais (Matias et al, 2014), demonstrating the effect of different edaphoclimatic conditions on the variability of the chemical attributes related to fruit quality.…”

“…The heritability coefficient of individual plots in the broad sense (Table 1) Consequently, there will be interference in the synthesis of photoassimilates reducing the soluble solids content of the fruit (Alves et al, 2018). Thus, the selection of genotypes based only on the soluble solids content of their fruits is equivalent to a less efficient selection.…”
