The choice of the training system is a key step to the establishment of new orchards since it affects yield and fruit quality. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the scion cv. Tropic Beauty in the Fruiting Wall training system compared with the Y-Shaped. The two training systems showed no statistical differences among the years regarding the length of phenological cycles (approximately 140 days). The Fruiting Wall showed higher values for yield per tree (from 80.2 to 112.9%), fruit weight (from 7.6 to 10.3%) and fruit pulp from 9.4 to 12.6%) than Y-Shaped. The mean values for flesh firmness and fruit chemical characteristics ranged over the years for both training systems. Despite the lack of significant differences for fruit chemical characteristics, the observed values were compatible with those expected for the cultivar. Data collected from the Fruiting Wall showed lower variance than those collected from Y-shape. This suggests that the Fruiting Wall leads to a higher uniformity of production and fruit quality than the Y-Shaped. Based on these results, we concluded that the Fruiting Wall improves the peach cv. Tropic Beauty production, particularly for yield by tree and fruit mass.

The objective of this study was to determine the harvest time, main components of yield and the physicochemical quality attributes of peach cultivars produced in a subtropical climate. The study was carried out in the Fruit Growing sector of the Federal Technological University of Paraná, Campus Dois Vizinhos, Paraná State, Brazil. The main components of yield and estimated productivity, background color of the epidermis, pulp firmness, soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA) and the SS/TA ratio of 17 peach cultivars were determined for two crop cycles: 2016 and 2017. The experimental design was a randomized block with four replicates of one tree per experimental unit, in a 17 x 2 bifactorial scheme (cultivars x years). Fruits of the cultivars: Aurora-1, Bonão, Douradão, Leonense, Ouromel, Rubimel and Zilli matured early, whereas those of Eldorado and BR-1 were last to mature. The cultivars Bonão, Charme and Eldorado were the most productive. Eldorado produced the highest caliber of fruits and Bonão produced the highest number of fruits per tree. The cultivars BR-1 and Eldorado produced the sweetest fruits and Leonense, the most acidic. The 2016 crop season provided greater productivity, with fruits of greater caliber and firmness of pulp.

The term adaptability refers to the ability of a genotype to respond favorably to environmental spur, while stability is the predictability of genotypic behavior. Therefore, the objective was to select Prunus rootstock cultivars with greater adaptability and genotypic stability for subtropical environmental conditions using the HMPRVG method. The experiment was conducted in Chapecó, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Twenty-one rootstock genotypes were evaluated under the ‘BRS-Libra’ canopy cultivar and one genotype from self-rooted seedlings. The 22 genotypes were evaluated for canopy volume, yield, fruit diameter and fruit set in the growing seasons 2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19. Adaptability and stability were measured by means of the harmonic mean relative performance of genotypic values (HMRPGV). In addition, genetic parameters for heritability and ratio test were measured. According to the results, the self-rooted, ‘De Guia’, ‘I-67-52-4’, ‘Mexico Row 1’ and ‘Rosaflor’ genotypes coincided most frequently in the ranking of the three most adaptable and stable genotypes. On the other hand, the ‘P. mandshurica’, ‘Rigitano’ and ‘Santa Rosa’ genotypes corresponded to the lowest adaptability and stability values, thus constituting low quality genetic materials for cultivation. It can be concluded that under the tested conditions the HMPRVG method is efficient for the Prunus rootstock selection cultivars and the ‘BRS-Libra’ grafted on ‘Mexico Row 1’, ‘Rosaflor’ rootstocks and trees from self-rooted seedlings have greater adaptability and phenotypic stability under the subtropical cultivation conditions.
