Enhancing the capability of both standardized precipitation index (SPI) and standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) for quantifying wet and dry events under distinct climate conditions is of paramount importance. The different recommendations of recent studies regarding the best distribution to calculate the SPEI and the lack of studies addressing the effect of different parameters estimation methods on the SPI motivated us to apply and adapt distinct testing methodologies to select candidate models for calculating these standardized drought indices (SDI). The study is based on two data sets. The first represents a tropical–subtropical region of Brazil. The second comprises the same weather stations that were used for developing the original version of the SPEI. The study also emphasized the performance of the models within the range of typical SDI values [−2.0 : 2.0]. Along with goodness‐of‐fit tests, we calculated the mean absolute errors between the indices values estimated from the candidate distributions, and their corresponding theoretical values derived from the standard normal distribution. The two‐parameter gamma and the generalized extreme value distributions are, respectively, recommended for general use in SPI and SPEI algorithms (1–12‐month timescales). The unbiased probability weighted moments are recommended to estimate the distributions parameters. The study also described a trade‐off between choosing the best model for the central part and for the tails of the distributions. This trade‐off suggests that the methodologies used to select models for the SDI algorithms may have to decide which part of the distribution (central or tails) should be emphasized. The behaviour of the errors among different wet/dry categories showed that both indices were only capable of representing drought and floods in a similar probabilistic way within the range [−2.0 : 2.0]. This feature supports our decision to emphasize model performances within such range.
The Mann-Kendall test has been used to detect climate trends in several parts of the Globe. Three variance correction approaches (MKD, MKDD and MKRD) have been proposed to remove the influence of serial correlation on this trend test. Thus, the main goal of this study was to evaluate the probability of occurrence of types I and II errors associated with these three approaches. The results obtained by means of Monte Carlo simulations and from a case of study allowed us to drawn the following conclusions: All approaches are capable of meeting the adopted significant level when they are applied to trend-free uncorrelated series. The approaches are as powerful as the original MK test when they are applied to uncorrelated series. Regarding serially correlated series it was verified that: (i) the performance of the MKDD and MKRD are comparable; (ii) both approaches may not be able to preserve the adopted significance level and (iii) although the MKD is capable of preserving the adopted significance level, it is less powerful than the MKDD and MKRD. Thus, there is a trade-off between the power of the three approaches and their capability of meeting the nominal significance level. Accordingly, we recommend the use of at least two approaches -MKD and MKDD(MKRD)-to evaluate the presence of trends in a given dataset.Key words: Monte Carlo simulations, serial correlation, climate change. O MKD sempre preserva a significância nominal.
ABSTRACT STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF ANNUAL MINIMUM AIR TEMPERATURE TRENDS IN SÃO PAULO STATEConsidering that some global warming investigations are based on historical series of air temperature, a question that should be raised is about the influence of urban heat sources on the weather stations areas. The first approach to answering this question is to verify if different weather stations that are geographically close to each others, show elevation trends starting at the same time, possible related to global radiative forcing. However, if these trends start at quite different period among the several weather stations, the elimination of local radiative forcing as the main responsible for this trend is not possible. The aim of this work was to detect continuous trends in annual minimum air temperature series of six weather stations of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The initial date of those trends was also evaluated. The series were fitted to the normal distribution. The Mann-Kendall test did not detected elevation trends starting at the same time among the analyzed series. Thus, local radiative forcing seems to be a more important factor, responsible for the average increase of the meteorological variable under investigation, than global radiative forcing. The results also indicate that local factors, such as urbanization influences, have to be evaluated and isolated in global warming or agricultural zo...
Pre-whitening approaches have been widely used to remove the influence of serial correlations on the Mann-Kendall trend test (MK_prew). However, previous studies indicate that this procedure may lead to a false reduction of the significance of a trend. An alternative approach (MK_interact) has been proposed to improve the assessment of the significance of a trend in auto-correlated data. Therefore, the present study compared the performance of the MK_prew and MK_interact for detecting trends in auto-correlated series. Sets of Monte Carlo experiments were carried out to evaluate the occurrence of type I and II errors obtained from both approaches. The analyses were also based on 10-day values of the difference between precipitation and potential evapotranspiration (P-EP) obtained from the location of Campinas, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The results found in this study allow us to conclude that the MK_interac outperformed the MK_prew in correctly identifying the significance of trends and that, concerning agricultural interests, the decreasing trend described by the MK_interac during the beginning of the crop growing seasons may reveal an unfavorable temporal distribution of the P-EP values.
Drought is a slow-moving hazard that occurs in virtually all countries of the world. In the light of this, several indices have been developed to improve the detection of drought's onset, as well as quantifying other features of this phenomenon. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) is often used in order to characterize meteorological droughts. In addition, this index is largely used by Brazilian's agricultural institutions. In order to add important information to the drought literature, this review article described a general definition of drought, evaluated it from a statistical point of view, and also described the SPI strengths and limitations. An adaptation of the SPI that aims to develop a probability-based agricultural drought index was also presented. The results obtained herein, associated with several studies carried out throughout the world, demonstrated that the SPI is not an agricultural index. It is just a mathematical approach developed to transforming skewed distributions into the Gaussian form. If this standardization cannot be achieved, the use of this index becomes meaningless. Therefore, a normality test should be used in establishing a temporal lower limit for the SPI computations. It was also verified that for periods in which the probability associated with the zero precipitation value is close to 0.5, the SPI may erroneously indicate the end of an existing drought (or a decrease in its severity) in the presence of a decrease in the actual evapotranspiration values.Key words: standardized precipitation index, normality, evapotranspiration.
A B S T R A C TThe Standardized Precipitation Index was developed as a probability-based index able to monitor rainfall deficit in a standardized or normalized way. Thus, the performance of this drought index is affected by the use of a distribution that does not provide an appropriate fit for the rainfall data. The goal of this study was to evaluate the adjustment of the gamma distribution for the rainfall amounts summed over several time scales (Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil), to assess the goodness-of-fit of alternative distributions to these rainfall series and to evaluate the normality assumption of the Standardized Precipitation Index series calculated from several distributions. Based on the Lilliefors test and on a normality test, it is verified that the gamma distribution is not suitable for calculating this Index in several timescales. The generalized normal distribution presented the best performance among all analysed distributions. It was also concluded that the drought early warning systems and the academic studies should re-evaluate the use of the gamma distribution in the Standardized Precipitation Index calculation algorithm. A computational code that allows calculating this drought index based on the generalized normal distribution has also been provided.
Palavras Chave: Séries não estacionárias, zoneamento agrícola, tendências climáticas ABSTRACT: STATISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS OF EIGHT MONTHLY PRECIPITATIONS SERIES OF THE STATE OF SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL.The correct understanding of the weather variability is a fundamental step in reducing the agricultural climate risk. The aim of the study was to evaluate the temporal variability of monthly precipitation data from eight regions of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Investigations related to possible climate trends were also held. Using the wavelet analysis, the likelihood ratio test, and the Mann-Kendall test, it was observed a very high temporal variability of the monthly precipitation data in the eight analyzed regions. The treatment of such series as strictly stationary, or the use of statistical models (such as Fourier spectral analysis), that only reveals what frequency (spectral) components exist in the precipitation signal, will lead to the loss of important information about the modulating forcing of the precipitation temporal variability. Despite the high temporal variability, no trends on the rainfall series were detected. In the sense of agrometeorological applications, the high temporal variability of the monthly precipitation signal should be considerate on the agricultural zoning model of the State of São Paulo, Brazil.
