Questions:The vegetation of high-alpine and subnival scree habitats in Iranian mountains has been poorly investigated so far despite the large variety of narrowly distributed vascular plant species and the expected vulnerability of these ecosystems to global warming. Which plant communities occupy these ecosystems and what is their syntaxonomic position? Which environmental factors determine the species composition of these habitats?Location: Alborz and Azerbaijan Mountains in N and NW Iran.Methods: A total of 141 phytosociological relev es were collected from 3200 to 4800 m a.s.l. This data set was classified using TWINSPAN, and the numerical classification was translated into a syntaxonomic system. Floristic differences between vegetation types were evaluated with detrended correspondence analysis (DCA). We determined the means and SD of measured environmental and vegetation parameters for all associations. Differences in the major environmental parameters among associations and alliances were analysed using ANOVA and post-hoc tests. Moreover, we determined the mean cover percentage of life forms in all associations.Results: All high-alpine and subnival scree communities are arranged in one class (Didymophyso aucheri-Dracocephaletea aucheri), two orders (Physoptychio gnaphalodis-Brometalia tomentosi, Didymophysetalia aucheri), three alliances (Elymo longearistati-Astragalion macrosemii, Erigerontion venusti, Didymophysion aucheri) and ten associations, which are new to science, except for one association. The territory of the class extends from Alborz to NW Iran and probably to E Anatolia, Transcaucasia and the Zagros Mountains. Altitude, aspect and edaphic qualities are the major ecological factors influencing the species composition and vegetation mosaic. Conclusions:Our study introduces a formal syntaxonomic classification of the scree vegetation at high altitudes in Iran, thus providing a scheme for ongoing ecological surveys and monitoring programmes to assess the impacts of climate warming and of human land use on these unique ecosystems.

Taxonomy and systematics provide the names and evolutionary framework for any biological study. Without these names there is no access to a biological context of the evolutionary processes which gave rise to a given taxon: close relatives and sister species (hybridization), more distantly related taxa (ancestral states), for example. This is not only true for the single species a research project is focusing on, but also for its relatives, which might be selected for comparative approaches and future research. Nevertheless, taxonomical and systematic knowledge is rarely fully explored and considered across biological disciplines. One would expect the situation to be more developed with model organisms such as Noccaea, Arabidopsis, Schrenkiella and Eutrema (Thellungiella). However, we show the reverse. Using Arabidopsis halleri and Noccaea caerulescens, two model species among metal accumulating taxa, we summarize and reflect past taxonomy and systematics of Arabidopsis and Noccaea and provide a modern synthesis of taxonomic, systematic and evolutionary perspectives. The same is presented for several species of Eutrema s. l. and Schrenkiella recently appeared as models for studying stress tolerance in plants and widely known under the name Thellungiella.

Objective: Due to importance of essential oil composition of herbals the identification of essential oil composition of four umbelliferae were studied. Material and Methods:The chemical composition of the essential oils of dried aerial parts of Ferulago angulata, Anthriscus nemorasa, Astrodaucus orientalis, Pimpinella peregrina were analysed by GC and GC-MS.Results: Forty eight, eighteen, fifty one and twenty components were identified representing 96.5%, 85.9%, 91.4% and 90.1% of the oils, respectively. The main compounds of Ferulago angulata were alpha-pinene (24.1%), Beta-pinene (22.7%), beta-phellandrene (20.5%), alpha-phellandrene (12.1%); the main compounds of Anthriscus nemorasa were Beta-caryophyllene (23.6%), caryophyllene oxide (12.3%), Sigma-cadinene (12.1%), and trans pinocarveol (9.8%); the main compounds of Astrodaucus orientalis were Alpha-pinene (29.6%), Beta-pinene (21.5%) and bicyclo(3.1.0)hex-2-ene (7.6%) Conclusion:The main constituents of Pimpinella peregrina trans-pinocarveol (35.1%), peregijerene (15.1%), Alpha-cubebene (12.4%), (+) Epibicyclosesquiphellandrene (7.5%), and Alpha-terpineol (6.7%) were determined.
