Flood risk assessment of the European road network

Abstract: Abstract. River floods pose a significant threat to road transport infrastructure in Europe. This study presents a high-resolution object-based continental-scale assessment of direct flood risk of the European road network for the present climate, using high-resolution exposure data from OpenStreetMap. A new set of road-specific damage functions is developed. The expected annual direct damage from large river floods to road infrastructure in Europe is EUR 230 million per year. Compared to grid-based approaches… Show more

“…The higher the runoff coefficient, the greater the rainfall becomes surface runoff, otherwise the infiltrated water will be smaller. In simple terms, the Rational formula [35], [36] can be used to analyze the effect of the runoff coefficient on peak discharge as shown in equation (5). The use of the rational formula has been widely used to analyze peak discharges in Indonesia [37], [38], [39] and in several other countries [40], [41], [42].…”

“…At European level, the importance of vulnerability studies concerning transport infrastructure in the context of climate change (Axelsen et al, 2016;Bles et al, 2016;van Ginkel et al, 2021) is underlined through the guidelines proposed in 2015 by the ROADAPT project (Roads for today adapted for tomorrow), implemented under the Transnational Road Research Program (CEDR). Alongside geomorphologic phenomena such as landslides, river floods are one of the most important hazards that affect transport infrastructure.…”

“…With the availability of geospatial network data on point and line assets several real-world studies of road and rail networks have been possible. Some of these include analysis of Swedish rail networks 52 , Vietnam transport networks 53 , UK rail network 54 , European road networks 55 , and global road and rail networks. 56 Using network data, different kinds of criticality analysis approaches have been adopted.…”
