Flexible photovoltaic power systems: integration opportunities, challenges and advances

Abstract: Photovoltaic power systems, consisting of solar modules, energy storage, and power management electronics, are of great importance for applications ranging from off-grid and portable power to ambient light harvesting for sensor nodes. Co-design and integration of the components using printing and coating methods on flexible substrates enable the production of effective and customizable systems for these diverse applications. In this article, we review photovoltaic module and energy storage technologies suitabl… Show more

“…In addition, ability to wear the devices directly on the skin can enable continuous monitoring of metabolites in bodily fluids like sweat . Standalone operation of such electronic systems cannot be realized without power source, such as a battery . If the battery is not equally compliant, it will negate the advantages of these flexible devices.…”

“…Flexible displays or solar cells are required for wearable electronic systems, but the conventional transparent conductor, ITO, is brittle. Highly conductive PEDOT:PSS have been extensively investigated to substitute ITO as the transparent electrode of flexible organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic solar cells, perovskite solar cells, and electrochromic devices …”

“…Emerging PV technologies are considered as an alternative to c‐Si for the applications where light weight, flexibility, low‐light performance, or esthetics considerations are valued. Examples of such applications include building‐integrated PV (façades, windows, rooftops), automotive (vehicle integration), or internet‐of‐things (autonomous sensors, Industry 4.0) . Module efficiencies of already 10%, when combined with additional offerings (new value propositions), could potentially provide commercially viable solutions for some of these applications, subjected to all other economic considerations …”
