Flaxseed ameliorates interstitial nephritis in rat polycystic kidney disease

Abstract: Flaxseed ameliorates Han:SPRD-cy rat polycystic kidney disease through moderation of the associated chronic interstitial nephritis. The diet alters renal content of polyunsaturated fatty acids in a manner that may promote the formation of less inflammatory classes of renal prostanoids.

“…Flaxseed-supplemented diets as well as flax oil, markedly lowered the UA level in healthy rats and in the condition of renal toxicity 33,34 . Additionally, flaxseed oil or flaxseed diets have lowered the serum and kidney creatinine levels in several pathological and experimental conditions 31,32,35,36 . Flaxseed oil has been shown to inhibit the renin mRNA levels in SHR 37 .…”

“…Linseed kidney protective activity is exerted through three mechanisms: moderation of associated interstitial nephritis, alteration of renal content of polyunsaturated fatty acids and less formation of inflammatory classes of renal prostanoides (Ogborn et al, 1999; BankovicCalic et al, 2002). It was concluded from the studies of Ghule et al (2011Ghule et al ( , 2012) that renal protective activity of ethanolic extract of flaxseed may result from its action on rennin-angiotensin system and inhibition of renal artery occlusion.…”
