Fire Behavior of Natural Rubber Filled with Intumescent Flame Retardant Containing Graphite

Abstract: Melamine salt of pentaerythritol phosphate/graphite (MPP-G) mixture was prepared by dispersing graphite flakes in MPP during its synthesis. The chemical structure of MPP-G was characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance, fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope. MPP-G was blended with natural rubber (NR) at different loading levels and its effect on the thermal stability and flammability properties of NR was studied. The cone calorimeter r… Show more

“…This physical barrier protected the polymer matrix from the effect of heat and flame. Moreover, it reduced the amounts of flammable volatile organic compounds which were leaving polymer matrix to combustion zone [26,36,37]. Also, the insulating char layer succeeded in reducing the smoke production of PVA composites relative to pure polymer.…”

“…were achieved when the amount of dispersed EG was 10% [90]. Other than that, melamine salt of pentaerythritol phosphate/graphite (MPP-G) has been synthesized by dispersing graphite flakes in melamine salt of pentaerythritol phosphate [91]. Thereafter, NR composites were prepared with different loading levels of MPP-G and thermal stability and flammability properties of these composites were studied [91].…”

“…[1,2] As a key performance characteristic, flame retardancy has also been the subject of investigations. [3][4][5] Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) has widely been considered in the industry thanks to its appropriate physical and mechanical properties. [6] However, due to its high flammability, there was a need for the use of suitable additives prior to the consideration of EVA for applications where high flameretardant properties were of importance.…”
