Fingerprinting Sediment Origin of the Silting Process of Urban Reservoirs

Abstract: The silting process of urban reservoirs has been occurring in many regions across the world. However, identifying the main sources of sediment and controlling the silting process in urban reservoirs are still unsolved problems in many regions, mainly in developing countries such as Brazil. In this study, we identify which land use most influences the siltation of reservoirs, and how the different tributary streams contribute to this process in two urban reservoirs located in Campo Grande, Midwestern Brazil. Th… Show more

“…With more in-depth studies in the future, different drivers of erosion can be more clearly connected to how they contribute to soil loss and sediment suspension in water bodies. For example, previous research verified how different tributaries contribute to erosion in urban reservoirs located in Campo Grande, midwest Brazil [51]. Understanding where to limit erosion can not only benefit urban areas but also reduce environmental impacts in agricultural areas in Brazil and beyond.…”

“…Soil erosion is the main cause of reservoir sedimentation, meaning that sedimentation is also a complex process that depends on numerous natural and anthropogenic factors [10,11]. Several research studies have been conducted on erosion processes, sediment yield and transport in reservoir basins, indicating the significance of sediment issues [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19].…”
