“…Prior empirical studies have given rise to inconsistent results regarding the relationship between the corporate governance mechanisms and accounting conservatism. Some studies find that the corporate governance is positively correlated with accounting conservatism (Ahmed and Duellman, 2007;Beekes, Pope, and Young, 2004), others show that they are negatively correlated (Bushman, Chen, Engel, and Smith, 2004;LaFond and Roychowdhury, 2008), while yet others find that they are not correlated. In addition, Chi et al (2009) indicate that there are two different perspectives regarding the relationship between corporate governance and accounting conservatism, with one being complementary and the other substitutionary.…”

Following this approach, our paper is concerned with the role of both capital structure and ownership structure as mechanisms of corporate governance and their ability to reduce the managers' discretionary choices in the accounting area (Bushman and Smith, 2002;Bushman et al, 2004). This can be said to be the first contribution of our paper since we introduce a modern and suitable indicator of managers' discretionary decisions in order to evaluate the performance of corporate governance mechanisms.…”

“…As informações oportunas são aquelas que incorporam renda econômica, ou seja, podem afetar a tomada de decisão de agentes econômicos, que, por sua vez, pode alterar o valor das ações (Bushman et al, 2004). Informações tempestivas são aquelas disponíveis em tempo hábil para a tomada de decisão de interessados.…”
