Field evaluation of the egg parasitoid, Trichogramma evanescens West. against the olive moth Prays oleae (Bern.) in Egypt

Abstract: In Egypt, Trichogramma evanescens Westwood (TE) is extensively used in inundative releases against a number of lepidopterous pests of several crops. However, the wasp had not been collected from olive groves. Field trials on the use of commercially available TE against the olive moth, Prays oleae (Bern.) (OM) were carried out for three successive years (2002)(2003)(2004). The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of inundative releases of this wasp on damage reduction. The obtained results were … Show more

“…Selection of the Trichogramma species showing highest affinity for the target pest and agroecosystem characteristics is crucial for ensuring the success of biological control programs (Smith 1996;Agamy 2010). Indeed, parasitoid effectiveness varies largely according to species (and even strains of one species) (Klug and Meyhöfer 2009;Tabone et al 2010) or climatic conditions (Smith 1996).…”

“…Notably, these tiny insects (length 1 mm) parasitize the eggs of many types of agricultural pest insects (Mills and Carl 1991;Smith 1996;Vinson 1998;Hazarika et al 2009;Agamy 2010;Suckling and Brockerhoff 2010), and they are easy to rear (Ayvaz and Karabörklü 2008;Pizzol and Pintureau 2008) and release in fields suffering from pest outbreaks. In order to develop biological control against P. xylostella in cabbage crops in France, the efficiency of 30 Trichogramma species, strains and Trichogrammatoidea sp.…”
