Field evaluation of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sprayer: effect of spray volume on deposition and the control of pests and disease in wheat

Abstract: BACKGROUND Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are a recently developed aerial spraying technology. However, the effect of spray volume variation on deposition and pesticide control efficacy is unknown. The effect of three UAV spray volumes (9.0, 16.8 and 28.1 L ha−1) using three different nozzle sizes on droplet deposition and wheat aphid and powdery mildew control efficacy was assessed. An electric air‐pressure knapsack (EAP) sprayer was used as a comparison. RESULTS Different spray volumes significantly influen… Show more

“…Wang et al . also revealed that UAVs are more cost effective and energy efficient compared to conventional sprayers . Comparisons of the mist sprayer and UAV revealed no statistically significant differences in terms of FHB control, but the working efficiency of the UAV was 13.3 times greater than that of the mist sprayer and the potential risks to humans and the environment were reduced.…”

“…These results are in accordance with previous studies. 31 Comparison of the results suggested that one reason for the high deposition and low losses with the UAV and mist sprayer could be related to the higher droplet density and coverage. Pesticide application using an UAV tends to involve ultra-low volume spraying, resulting in a relatively high concentration of pesticide compared to traditional sprayers, the excess spray from which accounts for their low deposition rate.…”

[11][12][13][14][15][16] UAV sprayers are capable of treating agricultural areas over complex geographic terrain not easily accessible to personnel or ground-based machinery. 15 Commercial UAV pesticide applications have become available in the USA even though a literature gap concerning the need to optimize the use of this technology presently exists.…”
