Weed control effect of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) application in wheat field

Abstract: Wheat is a major food source throughout the world. However, biological factors like pests and weeds can lead to lower crop yield. Most crop protection nowadays involves pesticide and herbicides application. This is commonly conducted with knapsack in China, which is inefficient and high labor intensive. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) are an aerial spraying technology recently-developed. Using UAV application is more flexible and standardized, the spraying efficiency is 60 times more than knapsack sprayer. Howev… Show more

“…The human population has increased dramatically and will reach about 10 billion by 2050; this will increase the need for intensive agriculture (Chen, et al, 2019). Global, overall production of soybean crops has immensely developed at a 4.68 percent Compound Annual Growth Rate, beginning around 1961, whereas African agricultural yield echelons are enormously increasing at 48percent quicker, at a rate of 6.84 percent each year.…”

“…At present, semi-mechanical operation and traditional manual spraying are still the main methods of plant protection in China. It led to a low utilization rate and excessive spraying of pesticides and caused serious pesticide residues and environmental pollution [3][4][5] . According to reports, the use of pesticides in China was about 2.5 times the world average, and the arable area contaminated with pesticides accounted for about 1/10 of the arable area [6] .…”

“…In general, the fixed-wing micro-UAV structure can be divided into conventional tail or tailless 7) configurations. eBee 8) , Pacflyer S100 9) , KS -1 10) , Skywalker X8 10) , and DATAhawk 11) are some examples of tailless micro-UAV designs that are popularly used for mapping missions. Given its simple structure, light weight, and mobile and rapid deployment, tailless micro-UAVs offer better options than conventional tail micro-UAVs 12) .…”
