Field array performance: Theoretical study of spatially correlated variations in amplitude coupling and static shift and case study in the Paris Basin

Abstract: Near‐surface propagation anomalies degrade the performance of field arrays. We studied this problem by modeling the signal detected by a field array. In our model, the signal arrival time and amplitude were each varied with distance along the array according to some arbitrary spatial trend. Given the intensity and the correlation distance of the signal variations, both wavenumber selectivity for noise rejection and frequency response for desired signal can be calculated. We begin by describing diagnostic graph… Show more

“…With its 0.25-m sampling interval, it was appropriately called the nanospread. Berni and Roever (1989) use this data set to illustrate the effect of statics variation across field arrays (intra-array statics). Their paper shows an important application of noise spreads: the investigation of recording effects that cannot be analyzed after acquisition with usual spatial sampling intervals and arrays.…”

“…The impact of intra-array static corrections on the output data has been shown by Berni and Roever (1989) and Steeples et al (1990). In some cases, the resulting signal distortion can be removed, or partially removed, with a subsequent dephasing operator.…”

“…Although heterogeneities in the shallow layers of the earth can give rise to spatially correlated time and amplitude intra-array perturbations, as analyzed in Berni and Rover (1989), the practical difficulty of finding a parametric model of these perturbations calls for their nonparametric estimation. Only nonparametric techniques to estimate TDs are considered in this paper.…”
