FGF-2 expression and the amount of fibroblast in the incised wounds of Rattus norvegicus rats induced with Mauli banana (Musa acuminata) stem extract

Abstract: Background: Traditional wound treatment using herbal medicine is thought to maintain the health of families and society in general economically, effectively, and efficiently without inducing side effects. One genus of plant that can be used as a traditional medicine is the Mauli banana, indigenous to South Borneo. Mauli banana stem contains bioactive compounds, most of which are tannins along with ascorbic acid, saponin, β-carotene, flavonoids, lycopene, alkaloids, and flavonoids. Tanin has antibacterial and a… Show more

“…Growth factors involved in angiogenesis are transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and fibroblast growth factors-2 (FGF-2). 9 This is probably due to alkaloid compounds stimulating the migration and proliferation of fibroblasts, stimulating macrophages and the process of angiogenesis. 6 The content of vitamin C stimulates the migration of monocytes to the wound area which then transforms into macrophages through modulation of the production of several cytokines during the inflammatory phase in the wound healing process.…”

“…When wound closure is reached, keratinocytes form a layer and differentiate to form a barrier as reepithelialization. 5,8,9 In the proliferation phase, fibroblasts are found to play a role in collagen synthesis and forming growth factors. One of them is FGF-2 which is a potent angiogenic stimulator.…”

“…22,23,21 Tannin contained in mauli banana stem is known to have antiseptic and antibacterial effects, while eugenol in basil leaf is known to damage bacterial cell walls. 11,24,25 The purpose of this study was to determine the difference of antibacterial effectivity between 25% mauli banana stem extract, 12.5% basil leaf extract, and 25%, 50%, and 75% concentration of mauli banana stem and basil leaf combination extract on Staphylococcus aureus.…”
