Fertility and infertility in aging women

Abstract: Age is often a dominant factor for women wanting to conceive. The objective of this study was to examine the outcome of an in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) program in relation to a woman's age. Between January 1995 and June 1997 we stimulated 2511 cycles. The mean age of the women was 34 years, with 21.9% under 30, 45.9% between 30 and 35, 24.5% between 36 and 39, and 7.7% over 39 years. All patients aged > or = 40 years had day 3 serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) conce… Show more

“…By the age of 40 years, the success of ART declines sharply (5,6). In addition to decreased pregnancy rates, IVF in older women results in decreased numbers of oocytes retrieved (7), reduced fertilization (8), and reduced implantation rates (9). Live birth delivery rates decrease by 50% for women aged 38-40 years, and by another 50% by the age of 40 years (10).…”

“…Aging has also been shown to contribute to decreased pregnancy and birth rates in assisted reproduction programs [26]. Advanced maternal age is associated with decreased numbers of retrieved oocytes [27] and reduced fertilization and implantation rates [2829]. In addition, advanced maternal age has been shown to be associated with a decreased pregnancy rate, an increased spontaneous miscarriage rate, congenital anomalies, and a decreased delivery rate [2430].…”
