Abstract: RESUMO. … Show more

“…Another aspect related to the lower intake of the half-simplified diet could be the presence of polyphenols in the cassava plants (0.38%), which may affect the palatability of the diet. Scapinello et al (2006) evaluated the performance and carcass characteristics of rabbits, from weaning to slaughter, fed diets in which corn was gradually replaced with cassava root meal (fiber variety), and also observed lower feed intake by the animals.…”

“…For rabbit diets, roughage sources are included as well, accounting for 35% to 40% of diet volume. Among these sources is alfalfa hay, which is a dietary source of high cost and limited availability (Scapinello et al, 2003).…”

“…In cuniculture, feed can make up to as much as 70% of the total costs (Scapinello et al, 2003;De Blas et al, 2015) and the alfalfa hay is the most expansive ingredient. In order to lower production cost, an alternative is to replace this costly ingredient with an ingredient of lower commercial value, such as carrot tops (Ngoshe et al, 2013;Owolek et al, 2016), which can be easily and cheaply acquired and has protein content (20%) similar to the ones found in the alfalfa hay (Sharma et al, 2012).…”
