There is a growing consumer demand for higher healthy foods such as berries which are a rich source of phenolic compounds. The current work evaluated blackberry cultivars: Cherokee, Tupy and Xavante; raspberry cultivars: Heritage, Fallgold and Black; and the hybrid Boysenberry. All berries were grown under homogenous subtropical conditions in Brazil. Black raspberry, Cherokee and Tupy blackberry cultivars showed the highest ratio between soluble solid contents and titratable acidity, and Fallgold and Heritage raspberry showed the highest titratable acidity. Total phenolic content ranged from 2.03 to 5.33 g kg -1 fresh weight and total anthocyanin content registered values from 0.41 to 1.81 g kg -1 fresh weight. The most common phenolic acids were gallic, p-coumaric and ellagic, and for anthocyanins: cyanidin-3-glucoside and malvinidin-3-glucoside. Antioxidant capacity ranged from 14.13 to 21.51 mol equivalent trolox kg -1 fresh weight. Black raspberry, all blackberry cultivars and the Boysenberry hybrid are appropriate to be consumed fresh, while Fallgold and Heritage raspberries are recommended to the food industry. Due to their phenolic richness and antioxidant properties, these fruits are of great interest to the fresh fruit market and to pharmaceutical industries. These results could help breeders and growers when planning the cultivar selection according to their foreseeable destination.Keywords: Rubus spp; Rubus idaeus; phenolics; anthocyanins; antioxidant capacity. Practical Application:There is a demand for products to meet consumers' need for high quality and healthy foods. The main results of this investigation could be of assistance to growers and breeders when planning the selection of cultivars according to their market destination. These rich in antioxidant fruits are of great interest to the fresh and processed fruit industry, as well as to the pharmaceutical industries.

-Physalis peruviana L. is a perennial plant, but commonly referred as annual in commercial crops. The cultivation of this species might be successful in Brazilian subtropical areas with an adequate and planned management. The objective of the present study was to quantify the production of Physalis peruviana L. with or without plastic covering over plant canopies, using two planting densities, managing the number of stems, and pruning side stems. This study was divided in two experiments; the first experiment evaluated the effect of spacing between each plant and the use of plastic covering in fruit production. The second experiment investigated the effect of the number of productive stems and of pruning in fruit production. The experimental design used for both experiments was randomized blocks, in 2 x 2 factorial scheme, which contained 6 blocks and 10 plants per plot. The following were analyzed for both experiments: production variables, estimated production, number of fruits per plant, mean fruit mass, mean fruit length and diameter, and chlorophyll relative index. Plastic covering and number of stems did not influence fruit production. The 3.0 x 0.5 m spacing without pruning side stems provided a larger production. Keywords:Thickening. Small fruits. EM REGIÃO SUBTROPICALRESUMO -A Physalis peruviana L. é uma planta perene, mas usualmente tratada como anual em plantios comerciais. Com um manejo adequado e planejado, o cultivo pode ter sucesso nas zonas subtropicais brasileiras. Objetivou-se neste trabalho, quantificar a produção de Physalis peruviana L. através da utilização ou não de cobertura plástica sobre o dossel das plantas, do uso de duas densidades de plantio, do manejo no número de hastes e utilização de poda das hastes laterais. O trabalho foi dividido em dois experimentos, onde no primeiro experimento avaliou-se o efeito do espaçamento entre plantas e uso de cobertura plástica na produção de frutos. O segundo experimento constituiu do efeito do número de hastes produtivas e uso da poda na produção de frutos. O delineamento experimental adotado, para ambos os experimentos foi blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 2 x 2, contendo 6 blocos e 10 plantas por parcela. Para ambos os experimentos foram analisadas as variáveis produção, produtividade estimada, número de frutos por planta, massa média dos frutos, comprimento e diâmetro médio dos frutos e índice relativo de clorofila. A cobertura plástica e o número de hastes não influenciaram na produção dos frutos. O espaçamento de 3,0 x 0,5 m sem o uso da poda das hastes laterais proporcionaram a maior produção.
