Chemical quality parameters and bioactive compound content of brazilian berries

Abstract: There is a growing consumer demand for higher healthy foods such as berries which are a rich source of phenolic compounds. The current work evaluated blackberry cultivars: Cherokee, Tupy and Xavante; raspberry cultivars: Heritage, Fallgold and Black; and the hybrid Boysenberry. All berries were grown under homogenous subtropical conditions in Brazil. Black raspberry, Cherokee and Tupy blackberry cultivars showed the highest ratio between soluble solid contents and titratable acidity, and Fallgold and Heritage … Show more

“…However, when three applications with a concentration of 4.5% were carried out, blackberry diameter increased (Figure 3a). In São Manuel (state of São Paulo), Segantini et al (2015) found diameters from 18 to 23.60 mm in non-irrigated plants without CaCl2 application for 'Tupy' blackberry. Moreover, Campagnolo and Pio (2012) observed a mean diameter of 23.6 mm in Marechal Cândido Rondon (state of Paraná).…”

“…Blackberries have high antioxidant activity, as they are rich in polyphenols, which are bioactive compounds of interest due to their possible benefits to human health (Segantini et al, 2015). In Brazil, Tupy is the most cultivated blackberry due to its rusticity, upright growth, great vigour and productive performance, as well as a good balance between acidity and sugar content in fruits (Campagnolo & Pio, 2012).…”

“…In addition, the consumption of white refined sugar has been associated with several health problems, including obesity, tooth decay, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes (Moynihan & Kelly, 2014). In recent years, due to the high medicinal and nutritional values (minerals, vitamins A and B, calcium and bioactive compounds) (Dawiec-Lisniewska et al, 2018) that are responsible for assisting in disease prevention (Segantini et al, 2015;Wen et al, 2016), blackberries (Rubus spp.) have gained interest from producers and consumers.…”
