Female- and Male-Specific Risk Factors for Stroke

Abstract: IMPORTANCEThe incidence of stroke is higher in men than in women. The influence of sex-specific risk factors on stroke incidence and mortality is largely unknown.OBJECTIVE To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of female-and male-specific risk factors for stroke.DATA SOURCES PubMed, EMBASE, and the bibliographies of articles were searched for studies published between January 1, 1985, and January 26, 2015, reporting on the association between female-and male-specific characteristics and stroke.STUDY … Show more

“…Diabetes is a serious public health concern and a societal burden [2]. In 2015, there were approximately 23.1 million diagnosed cases of diabetes among Americans and estimated additional 7.2 million undiagnosed cases [3]. “…Strati ed by age, we found that rs10242455 might be a protective effect on IS susceptibility at age ≤ 64 years, suggested that the risk association of the polymorphisms might be age dependent. Stroke is a sex-speci c disease and the incidence of stroke is higher in men than in women [27] . Strati cation analysis by sex showed that the contribution of rs10242455 to the reduced IS risk and rs2070672 to the increased IS occurrence in males but not females, which indicated that the in uence of genetic factors on IS risk might present gender difference.…”

“…It is a major cause of physical disability throughout the world and is the main cause of long-term hospitalizations, which can significantly increase the cost of treatment 2 . Risk factors associated with the disease include increased age, gender, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus (DM), smoking, obesity, low triglycerides, high cholesterol diet, high salt diet, alcohol consumption, family history, atrial fibrillation, and oral contraceptive pills (OCP) [3][4][5] . The most common type of stroke is ischemic stroke, which consists of 85% of all strokes and is divided into two types (thrombotic and embolic) 6 .…”
