“…Histologically, FISS may contain seldom large macrophages that display in the cytoplasm a blue to greyish material, most likely due to ingestion of adjuvant substances [20,21]. Such macrophages were observed in less than 50% of FISS [22,23,24]. No such macrophages were observed in our study.…”

“…However, other sarcoma types were reported, such as: osteosarcoma, condrosarcoma, myxosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, malignant fi brous histiocytoma, myofi broblastic sarcoma and undifferentiated sarcoma [3,8,15,22,24,[26][27][28][29][30].…”

“…As it was shown in our research, histopathological analysis of randomly selected 26 archival cases revealed that free margins were present only in 2 sarcomas. Free margins were shown to be related to more favorable prognosis in cases of FISS (Giudice et al 2010). The results obtained suggest that widespread and precise owners; education by veterinarians is necessary, because delaying diagnosis and surgery makes complete resection hard to perform or even impossible due to very fast growth of FISS.…”

“…One of the widespread prognostic factors for FISS is complete excision with clean margins of neoplasm at the first surgical procedure, which seems to contribute towards an increase in DFI (Davidson et al, 1997;Hershey et al, 2000) and OS (Davidson et al, 1997), although two recent studies reported an absence of correlation between the status of surgical margins and prognosis (Cohen et al, 2001, Martano et al, 2005. The obtainment of clean surgical margins is considered important for predicting local recurrence of FISS (Kobayachi et al, 2002;Giudice et al, 2010). But there are reports of up to 50% recurrence rates in neoplasms excised with clear surgical margins (Romanelli et al, 2008;Phelps et al, 2011).…”

“…But there are reports of up to 50% recurrence rates in neoplasms excised with clear surgical margins (Romanelli et al, 2008;Phelps et al, 2011). This high recurrence rate can be explained by an asymmetrical dissemination of neoplastic cells, hindering accurate margin assessment (Giudice et al, 2010;Ehrhart & Powers, 2013). Another theory is that the inflammation caused by the surgical treatment can cause a new oncogenic process in genetically predisposed patients, causing recurrence (Ladlow, 2013).…”
