Epidemiological and morphological analysis of feline injection site sarcomas

Abstract: Feline injection site sarcomas (FISS) are malignant neoplasms of mesenchymal origin which arise in sites of injections in cats. The prevalence is estimated between 1 in 1000 and 1 in 10 000 vaccinations in the United Kingdom. The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of FISS in Poland and to analyse clinical aspects and histological and cytological features of injection site sarcomas. In our study the prevalence of FISS was 0.16% (16 FISS on 10.000 of cats) in feline patients in one of a veterinary s… Show more

“…Histologically, FISS may contain seldom large macrophages that display in the cytoplasm a blue to greyish material, most likely due to ingestion of adjuvant substances [20,21]. Such macrophages were observed in less than 50% of FISS [22,23,24]. No such macrophages were observed in our study.…”

“…However, other sarcoma types were reported, such as: osteosarcoma, condrosarcoma, myxosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, malignant fi brous histiocytoma, myofi broblastic sarcoma and undifferentiated sarcoma [3,8,15,22,24,[26][27][28][29][30].…”

“…In case of spontaneous sarcomas we know from the history of the patients that tumors were detected by the owners at least 3 months before surgical resection (data not shown). Giant neoplastic cells were not found, however, according to the literature they are found in 50% of FISS and only in 11% of spontaneous feline sarcomas [ 40 , 46 ].…”

“…Among the histological types, fibrosarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma and chondrosarcoma are frequently observed (HENDRICK, 2017). FISS present unique characteristics related to their origin in the subcutaneous tissue, marked necrosis in the center of the tumor, high cellular pleomorphism, and mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate in the periphery of the neoplasm (DODDY et al, 1996;KASS et al, 2003;KLICZKOWSKA et al, 2015).…”

“…Even when macroscopically, the neoplasm presents a capsule, histologically, projections of the tumor can often be seen extending away from the mass along fascial planes (HENDRICK, 2017). FISS often originate in the subcutaneous tissue of interscapular and thoracic wall regions, where application of substances has been previously performed (KLICZKOWSKA et al, 2015).…”
