Introduction. The aim of the study was to determine the quality of life of students of a University of the Third Age (U3A) and examine its correlations with demographic variables, physical fitness, perception ability, and emotional well-being. Material and methods. The study involved 116 women aged 50 to 88 years who participated in U3A classes held at the University of Physical Education in Warsaw. Quality of life was assessed using an abridged version of the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Additionally the Fullerton Functional Fitness Test, a dynamometer hand grip strength test, and Romberg's test were performed. The Attention and Perceptiveness Test (version 6/9) by Ciechanowicz and Stańczak, the UMACL Mood Adjective Checklist by Matthews, Chamberlain, and Jones, as well as the Geriatric Depression Scale by Yesavage were also used. Finally, data concerning age, marital status, economic status, chronic diseases, and medication use was collected with a specially designed questionnaire. Results. The U3A students who took part in the study perceived their quality of life as relatively high. The domain of quality of life which was found to be the most strongly correlated with demographic variables was the psychological health domain: scores in this domain decreased with the subjects' age and increased with their level of education and economic status. Health satisfaction was directly proportional to economic status and inversely proportional to the level of education. Depression scores correlated significantly negatively with quality of life scores in all domains, the overall perception of quality of life, and health satisfaction, as well as predicting quality of life in the domains of psychological health and the environment. The predictors of the subjects' perceived quality of life were the following: lower body strength, agility, flexibility, and aerobic endurance. Conclusions. The findings of the study confirm that demographic variables (age, education, and economic status), depression and mood, as well as physical fitness are important predictors of quality of life in women in late adulthood.

StreszczenieWstęp: W pracy przedstawiono analizę opinii kobiet w wieku okołomenopauzalnym o subiektywnie odczuwanych objawach charakterystycznych dla okresu klimakterycznego, które mają związek z funkcjonowaniem zawodowym, oraz ocenę wpływu wybranych zmiennych na występowanie i nasilenie odczuwania tych objawów i poczucie satysfakcji z życia. Materiał i metody: Badaniem objęto 250 aktywnych zawodowo kobiet w wieku okołomenopauzalnym (40-57 lat) mieszkających w dużych miastach. W badaniu wykorzystano Skalę Satysfakcji z Życia (Satisfaction with Life Scale -SWLS) do oceny poczucia zadowolenia z życia oraz Indeks Kuppermana (IK) do samodzielnej ilościowej i jakościowej oceny objawów klimakteryjnych. Wykorzystano także opacowany przez prowadzących badanie kwestionariusz zawierający indeks zdefiniowanych objawów okresu okołomenopauzal-nego, dzięki któremu można było przeprowadzić analizę Pareto-Lorenza. Wyniki: Wyniki świadczą o statystycznie istotnej zależności między występowaniem i nasileniem objawów menopauzalnych (według IK) a miejscem pracy kobiet (p = 0,04912), opieką ginekologiczną (p = 0,00325), stosowaniem hormonalnej terapii zastępczej (HTZ) (p = 0,01523) oraz oceną zadowolenia z życia (p = 0,0325). Po przeanalizowaniu wyników za pomocą analizy Pareto-Lorenza okazało się, że kobiety wskazały uderzenia gorąca, rozdrażnienie, obniżoną koncentrację i koordynację, zaburzenia snu oraz zwiększoną potliwość jako objawy szczególnie wpły-wające na efektywne funkcjonowanie zawodowe i powodujące dyskomfort. Wnioski: Istnieje wyraźna, statystycznie istotna zależność między miejscem pracy kobiet, opieką ginekologiczną, stosowaniem HTZ oraz oceną satysfakcji z życia a nasileniem objawów występujących w okresie okołomenopauzalnym. Zaobserwowano zespół objawów, których obecność i nasilenie wpływają na poczucie zadowolenia z życia i ocenę funkcjonowania zawodowego. Kobiety jako objawy okresu menopauzalnego utrudniają-ce im funkcjonowanie zawodowe najczęściej wskazują uderzenia gorąca, rozdrażnienie, obniżoną koncentrację i koordynację, zaburzenia snu oraz zwiększoną potliwość. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus) is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs mainly in women. Typically, symptoms appear within the first few years of adolescence, but currently an increase can be observed in the percentage of postmenopausal women with this condition. This is possibly due to the sophisticated treatment of the disease, which significantly improves the survival curve and prognosis. Genetic and environmental factors are involved in the development of SLE. Both regulation of the immune system and the activity of this disease are influenced by a variety of hormones, including: 17β-estradiol, testosterone, prolactin, progesterone and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Early menarche, menstrual cyclicity, the total number of years characterized by ovulatory cycles and early menopause are correlated with the development of SLE.Because of the health risks, attempts are increasingly being made to evaluate the impact of exogenous hormones (especially those applied exogenously) on the course of SLE. In particular, the role of estrogens is being highlighted, either endo- or exogenous, including oral contraceptives (OC), therapy used in the treatment of infertility, and hormonal replacement therapy (HRT). The purpose of this manuscript is the revision of the literature concerning the impact of both endo- and exogenous estrogens on the development of lupus, inducement of flares and any possible complications.
