Feeding habits and prey selection by the skate Dipturus chilensis (Elasmobranchii: Rajidae) from the south-western Atlantic

Abstract: The diet of Dipturus chilensis was composed mainly of the nototheniid fish Patagonotothen ramsayi, squid Illex argentinus, hake Merluccius hubbsi, serolid isopods, and crustaceans. Our results suggest that D. chilensis feeds selectively on some teleosts and rejects eel-like fishes. Total length of consumed P. ramsayi was significantly correlated with the skate's mouth width.

“…Other benthic invertebrates are present in the diet but in lower proportions. The dominance of fishes and cephalopods in the diet of large individuals of larger skate species has been reported by several authors (Ebert et al, 1991;Smale and Cowley, 1992;Orlov, 1998;Lucifora et al, 2000;Koen Alonso et al, 2001;Brickle et al, 2003). Koen Alonso et al (2001) noted that smaller specimens of the long nose skate Dipturus chilensis in the Argentinean Sea preyed on benthic crustaceans, whereas larger individuals foraged mostly on fishes and molluscs.…”

“…The Argentine hake is the most important demersal fishing resource on the Argentinean shelf (Bezzi et al, 2004). Furthermore, the Argentine hake is consumed by a lot of organisms, such as Illex argentinus (Santos and Haimovici, 1997), Squalus acanthias (García de la Rosa and Sánchez, 1997), Dipturus chilensis (Lucifora et al, 2000;Koen Alonso et al, 2001), dusky dolphins Lagenorynchus obscurus (Alonso et al, 1998) and 20 other fish species (García de la Rosa and Sánchez, 1997), which prey on different stages of ontogeny.…”

“…Birth, growth until sexual maturity, mating and the laying of eggs or breeding, are completed in these coasts (Cousseau, 1986;Chiaramonte, 1998;Lucifora et al, 2000aLucifora et al, , 2000bChiaramonte and Pettovello, 2000;Braccini and Chiaramonte, 2002;Lucifora et al, 2002). Likewise, the biggest disembarked volumes of chondrichthians come from this region (Massa et al, 2003).…”

“…Santiago et al (2010) found that size-related shift in diet is probably related to morphological limitations. And many reports show that ontogenetic changes in the diet of fishes have been related to changes in the size of the mouth (Schael et al 1991;Lucifora et al 2000). Swimming speed is also correlated with feeding of fish, and larger pectoral fins are able to facilitate accurate and stable feeding (Higham 2007).…”
