The Economic Feasibility of Passive Houses in Korea

The number of passive houses and zero-energy buildings being developed is increasing, as measures to reduce the rapidly increasing building energy consumption. While government building policies focus on energy savings, investors and the building market emphasize the initial investment cost. These conflicting perspectives obstruct the development of passive houses in the building market. In this study, a series of building energy analyses, including the effect of energy saving measures and economic information considering long-term economic benefit and incentives policy, will be presented. Analyses were performed on the energy-saving measures needed to improve the performance of single-family houses in Korea to that of the passive house standard, as well as the energy saving effect and increased cost. The application of energy saving measures for passive house implementation resulted in an additional cost of 1.85%–4.20% compared to the conventional reference house. In addition, the proposed passive house alternative shows a short payback period and life cycle cost (LCC) result, compared to a conventional building’s life cycle period. The possibility of passive house implementation is high, and developing the passive house is affordable for the investor or end user in Korea.

IntroductionEngaging family caregivers could be a critical asset to make the ‘ageing-in-place’ imperative a reality. This is particularly evident in rural and remote areas, where caregivers can fill the gaps that exist due to the fragmentation of the welfare system. However, there is little knowledge about the expectations that family caregivers have from healthcare services in rural and remote areas.Place4Carers (P4C) project aims to co-produce an innovative organisational model of social and healthcare services for family caregivers of older citizens living in Vallecamonica (Italy). The project is expected to facilitate ageing-in-place for older citizens, thus helping caregivers in their daily care activities.Methods and analysisP4C is a community-based participatory research project featuring five work packages (WPs). WP1 consists of a survey of unmet needs of caregivers and older people receiving services in Vallecamonica. WP2 consists of a scoping literature review to map services that provide interventions of support to caregivers living in remote areas and promote engagement. WP3 organises co-creation workshops with caregivers to co-design, co-manage, and co-assess ideas and proposals for shaping caregiver-oriented services and organisational models. WP3 enriches the results of WP1 (survey) and WP2 (scoping literature review), and aims to co-create new ideas for intervention support with and for caregivers in relation to the objectives, features and characteristics of a new service able to address the caregivers’ needs and expectations. WP4 tests the service ideas co-created in WP3 through piloting an intervention based on ideas co-created with caregivers. Finally, WP5 assesses the transferability of the intervention to other similar contexts.Ethics and disseminationThe study has been approved by the Ethics Committees of the Department of Psychology of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and Politecnico of Milan. Results will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals, scientific meetings and meetings with the general population.

Movement of paperless campus becomes a trend toward environmental sustainability, flexible learning, and 4Cs oriented (Creativity, Critical Thinking, Collaboration, and Communication). The use of 4Cs and Quick Response (QR) Codeoriented pocketbook is an alternative to building collaborative students 'reading culture and stimulating students' creativity, innovation, and thinking. The study uses three steps of activity that is planning, product, and evaluation. There are five experts involved in media validation including experts: media, information technology, materials, learning, and assessment of teaching. Tests conducted on 32 students of Mechanical Engineering Education Department of Universitas Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa. The results showed that the dimensions of the pocketbook are A6 with a maximum thickness of 5mm, has a potent substance that is a chapter, learning objectives, material summary, QR Code equipped with the comprehensive material, and reference. Feasibility of media and information technology experts is 77.34% (very feasible). Eligibility of the content, learning, and evaluation of 66.44% (feasible) and the feasibility of the user is 75.11% (very feasible). In product, the QR Code-based mobile pocketbook is acceptable regarding appearance, content, substance, practicality, and efficiency in use.
