Fault Tolerant Control of Advanced Power Generation Center for More-Electric Aircraft Applications

Abstract: This paper presents a control scheme for a recently reported aircraft advanced power generation center (APGC) during postfault operation conditions. Within the APGC, two electrical generators extract power from two separate engine shafts and supply electrical power to a common HVDC bus through their dedicated main AC/DC power converters. An extra back-to-back (BTB) converter is also used to connect the ac terminals of the two generators. This architecture provides merits of fault tolerance capabilities of the … Show more

“…T HE study of vehicle controls has been extended to various conditions where fault tolerance is widely involved in the corresponding control design, which is denoted as faulttolerant control (FTC) [1,2]. Scientists have worked on the FTC study for decades in various fields such as crafts in the air or space, land vehicles and industrial manufacturing [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. In previous studies, the FTC is usually applied to alleviate abrupt errors and provides the most feasible solution when inevitable damages happen for equipment in different fields [11].…”

“…On the other side, it is very important to note that for aerospace applications, simply having better power densities is not enough. Regardless of how pushed the design is in terms of power density, the electrical drive still needs to respect the fault-tolerant capabilities that are set for such safety-critical applications [6] [26]. Driven by the motivations of enhancing DC-link voltage utilization, the power quality as well as the fault-tolerant capability, new inverter topologies as well as adapting advanced modulation schemes are being intensively investigated [27].…”
