Fast switchable grating based on orthogonal photo alignments of ferroelectric liquid crystals

Abstract: We demonstrate a fast switchable grating based on ferroelectric liquid crystals and orthogonal planar alignment by means of photo alignments. Both 1D and 2D gratings have been constructed. The proposed diffracting element provides fast response time of around 20 μs, contrast of 7000:1 and high diffraction efficiency, at the electric field of 6 V/μm. The saturated electro-optical (EO) states up to very high frequency (≈5 kHz) are the real advantage of the proposed switchable grating, which opens several opportu… Show more

“…In this paper, the used FLC materials is working in a electro-optical mode called electrically suppressed helix (ESH) mode, which is characterized by the good alignment quality and faster response time at low driving voltages [32,33]. The working principle of the ESH FLC can be illustrated by Figure 1.…”

“…FLC is considered to be a good candidate for modern display and photonics applications [32,33], which shows nearly the fastest switching speed among all the LC materials. In this paper, a faster switching FLC DG based on patterned photoalignment is demonstrated.…”

“…20 Furthermore, an approach has been proposed to realize FLC diffraction element, which includes double-sided alignment fabrication procedure. 21 This method incorporates the two-step alignment procedure simultaneously on both top and bottom substrates, which reduces the cell assembling complexity for one to one domain alignment matching. However, because of the beam size expansion and LC disclination, the exact pattern cannot be transferred to alignment layer precisely and, therefore, this method does not work precisely for the small grating pitches.…”

“…However, because of the beam size expansion and LC disclination, the exact pattern cannot be transferred to alignment layer precisely and, therefore, this method does not work precisely for the small grating pitches. 21 To overcome these limitations, a single-side alignment method can be used. 22 It has been proved that these kinds of asymmetric boundary conditions alignment procedure are a better option to avoid a competition between aligning forces and FLC helix which can give better alignment quality to FLC grating cells.…”

“…The easy axis and value of A φ can only be changed by another exposure by the same light source with a different E-vector. Moreover, A φ also depends on the SD1 layer thickness; for such applications it has already been optimized to 10 nm [22][23][24].…”
