Th e presented article focuses on an analysis of the phenomena appearing in the implementation of the transition from classic conventional technology in the production of agricultural food products to an ecological manner of farming. Th e main objective is an empirical analysis of the determinants of the implementation of ecological production technology, whereby not only is their defi nition focused on, but also the quantifi cation of the level of their eff ect. Th e primary methodological tool for achieving the objective is a binary choice model, which was estimated in three variants -probit model, logit model and linear probability model. Th ese estimations are conducted on the basis of the unbalanced panel data from 531 agricultural businesses -legal entities obtained over the time period [2004][2005][2006][2007][2008]. Results of the analyses indicate that the transition to and implementation of the organic production technology is negatively aff ected primarily by the higher age of the farmers and the high productivity of labour. On the other hand, the subsidies for the support of organic agriculture, as well as a high return on cost can be considered as the factors which positively infl uence the implementation of the organic technology. Given this fact, it is possible, through agricultural policy, to eff ectively infl uence the number of organically managing farmers, as well as the acreage of the organically managed land. And from the achieved outputs, the type of farm is subsequently characterised where a transition to organic farming may most likely be expected.

The organic farming shows growth trend all over the world. It became an integral part of the agricultural production not only in the developed countries, but also in the so called Third World countries. In the latter countries, the organic farming develops mainly in connection with the fair trade projects. The share of the organic farming in the agricultural land is in many countries above 10%, including the Central and Eastern European countries. The Czech Republic actively supports the organic production. The share of the Czech organic farming in the agricultural land has overpassed 11.5%. The paper deals with organic production in the South Bohemian Region. The aim is to determine main changes in the structure of the organic production in the period 2008-2011, specifically in connection with the changes in the subsidy policy. The increase of individual organically farmed areas correlates positively with the increase of subsidies set up within the Programme of rural development [2007][2008][2009][2010][2011][2012][2013]. At the same time, it is obvious that those subsidies affect the diversity of the agricultural crops. Keywords: animal production, organic farming, plant production, policy of subsidies, South Bohemian Region. AbstraktEkologické zemědělství vykazuje celosvětově růstový trend. Stalo se organickou součástí agrární produkce nejenom ve vyspělých zemích, ale i v zemích tzv. třetího světa. Zde se pak rozvíjí hlavně ve spojení s projekty fair trade. Také EU podporuje tuto oblast alternativní agroenvironmentální produkce. V mnoha zemích se podíl ekologického zemědělství na zemědělské půdě pohybuje nad 10% a to včetně zemí bývalého východního bloku. ČR aktivně podporuje ekologickou produkci. Její podíl na zemědělské půdě již přesáhl 11,5 %. Předmětem výzkumu je bioprodukce v jihočeském regionu, cílem pak vymezení základních změn v její struktuře v období let 2008-2011, a to konkrétně ve vazbě na změny v dotační podpoře. Rozšíření jednotlivých ekologicky obhospodařovaných ploch pozitivně koreluje s navýšením dotací v rámci Programu rozvoje venkova 2007-2013. Zároveň současné dotace do EZ ovlivňují diverzitu zemědělských plodin.

Efficiency of Egyptian organic agriculture: A local maximum likelihood approach

Productive efficiency analysis is a relevant tool that can be used to evaluate differences in the performance between conventional and organic farms. Such study is important for the assessment of the economic viability of these two agricultural systems. Although the existing research has widely used the stochastic frontier methodology and the data envelopment analysis nonparametric approach to assess farming performance, the use of the local maximum likelihood (LML) approach proposed by Kumbhakar et al. is scarce. This study represents the first analysis that compares the efficiency levels of organic and conventional farms in Egypt. To do so, we apply LML methods to cross‐sectional, farm‐level data collected from a sample of 60 Egyptian farms. Results suggest that performance of organic farmers is slightly better than performance of their conventional counterparts. Further, we find a positive relationship between technical efficiency and farm size. [EconLit citations: C14, Q12, D24].
