While there is growing recognition of the positive role played by organic farming in the reduction of the negative externalities due to conventional agriculture, there is uncertainty about the effect of the latter on the economic performance of the farms. In this scenario, the present paper aims at investigating the effect of organic farming on technical efficiency in Italian olive farms. A cross-section dataset was analyzed through the stochastic frontier function, where the adoption of organic farming was explicitly modeled. Then, to obtain an unbiased estimate of the impact of organic farming on technical efficiency, a propensity score matching method was implemented. The findings reveal that organic farming increases technical efficiency in Italian olive farms by approximately 10%. The highest impact of organic farming is observed in small farms. As for the propensity to become organic, we found that the production and the direct sales of a higher quality of gross marketable output, as well as the intensity of labor and machines, increase the probability to adopt organic farming. Conversely, farm localization, the availability of family labor, and financial capital discourage conversion to the organic farming system.

Resumo: A produção agropecuária na região amazônica avançou de forma exponencial, no entanto esse crescimento econômico resultou em significativos impactos ambientais nos ecossistemas desse bioma, como aumento do desflorestamento e da degradação da biodiversidade da floresta amazônica. Com esse enfoque, o presente artigo objetivou estimar a ecoeficiência da produção agropecuária dos municípios do bioma Amazônia, tendo como ênfase a discussão dos fatores determinantes e os desdobramentos espaciais desse indicador de sustentabilidade. Para isso, utilizou-se da metodologia DEA com duplo bootstrap e regressão truncada (DEA-BTR) e o índice espacial de Moran. A partir dos resultados, observou-se que a ecoeficiência média foi de 0,5490, indicando que os municípios amazônicos poderiam reduzir o consumo dos insumos e a pressão na biodiversidade em 45,01%, em conjunto com a manutenção das receitas agropecuárias e da área preservada. Por outro lado, entre os fatores determinantes da sustentabilidade da agropecuária amazônica, a escolaridade do produtor e a assistência técnica estiveram positivamente associadas aos índices de ecoeficiência estimados, sendo essas as variáveis exógenas mais consistentes do modelo. Ademais, o índice global de Moran foi positivo e significativo estatisticamente, o que demonstrou a presença de autocorrelação da ecoeficiência agropecuária na Amazônia.

This study aims to determine the technical aspects of organic food systems in rice agribusiness and analyze the pattern of economic and institutional structures of agribusiness in East Java of Indonesia. Also, this study investigates the feasibility of farming and understands the strategies of rice agribusiness development. This study was conducted in several places in East Java of Indonesia, covering the district of Blitar, Kediri, Bondowoso, Tulungagung, and Malang. The data were collected through a structured questionnaire and focus group discussion. Furthermore, the data were analyzed using efficiency analysis, revenues analysis, and SWOT analysis. The findings indicated that, technically, the district of Bondowoso, Malang, Kediri, and Tulungagung had implemented the organic systems, while the district of Blitar applied under semi-organic systems. The pattern of economic institutions of agribusiness commodity consists of the production facility, farming, post-harvest and product processing, marketing, and support services institutional. These results showed that the organic rice farming is economically viable, and the government support was provided in the form of the establishment of development centers, the facilitation of agricultural machines, integrated crop management field school, and the organic certification. These findings suggest that several places in East Java have prospective opportunities for production of rice agribusiness development.
