Objective To evaluate the risk of adverse maternal outcomes among adolescents experiencing a repeat pregnancy in the Philippines. Methods Data were analyzed from four waves (1998–2013) of a cross‐sectional nationally representative survey. We included 2518 non‐nulliparous and non‐pregnant women aged 15–44 years with an interpregnancy interval (IPI) of 24 months or less. Multivariate logistic regression was used to measure the association of repeat pregnancy with adverse maternal outcomes by age group (11–19, 20–24, and 25–45 years), accounting for clustering within each respondent. A stratified analysis by IPI (≤24 vs >24 months) was conducted among 11–19 year olds. Results No association was observed between repeat pregnancy and low birthweight among adolescent mothers. A second pregnancy increased the risk of pregnancy (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 10.49, 95% confidence interval [CI] 4.00–27.49) and labor (adjusted OR 3.61, 95% CI 1.61–8.09) complications among adolescent women (11–19 years). Interaction tests showed there was a significant increase in these risks as compared with older women. Stratified analysis by IPI did not modify the observed effect for either outcome. Conclusion Repeat pregnancy among Filipino adolescents increased the risk of pregnancy and labor complications irrespective of IPI.

Objetivo. Determinar la relación existente entre la hemoglobina materna de gestantes adolescentes y el peso de los recién nacidos en el Instituto Nacional Materno Perinatal (INMP). Material y métodos. Transversalmente se analizaron 914 gestantes seleccionadas mediante criterios de inclusión y exclusión de 2729 partos de adolescentes atendidas en el INMP correspondiente al año 2017. Los datos se recogieron del registro de partos y las historias clínicas, las variables de interés fueron la hemoglobina materna y el peso del recién nacido. Resultados. De los 914 partos 299 madres (32%) presentaron anemia y 615 (68%) no la presentaron, el grupo etario predominante fueron las adolescentes en la etapa tardía 73% (con anemia) y 71% (sin anemia). En el control prenatal predominó los insuficiente o sin control 74% (con anemia) y 73%(sin anemia). Las solteras fueron el grupo mayoritario, 91% (con anemia) y 93% (sin anemia). La procedencia de los distritos con quintiles IV y V fue el 90% (con anemia) y el 87% (sin anemia). No se encontró asociación entre el peso del recién nacido y la hemoglobina del tercer trimestre de la madre (r de Pearson = -0,0141; valor p = 0,6702). Conclusiones. No encontramos relación entre la hemoglobina materna baja y el peso al nacimiento de gestaciones a término de adolescentes, esto podría deberse a que en el control del peso fetal existirían múltiples factores que podrían ser más influyentes en este grupo de gestantes adolescentes.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the adverse outcomes and problems of adolescent pregnancy.Materials and Methods: Obstetric records of 171 pregnant adolescents between 14-19 years old, who had given birth in our obstetric service between 2009 and 2016 were retrospectively evaluated. The patients were divided into two groups as early adolescents aged between 14 and 15 years old and as late adolescents aged more than 15 up to 19 years old. Babies with birth weight under 2500 gr were evaluated as low-birth-weight. The variables of gestational week at delivery, ratios of preterm birth, stillbirth, preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), preeclampsia, and mode of delivery of early and late adolescents were compared.Results: The age of early and late adolescents were determined as 14.6 ± 0.5 and 17.7 ± 0.5 years, respectively. Preterm birth was present in 3 (37.5 %) of early adolescent pregnancies and 66 (40.5%) of late adolescent pregnancies, respectively. While in early adolescent pregnancies, there was no case with stillbirth, PPROM or preeclampsia, in late adolescent pregnancies, stillbirth was observed in 5 cases (2.9%), PPROM in 6 cases (3.7%) and preeclampsia in 4 cases (2.5%). There was no significant difference between early and late adolescents in regards to the gestational age at delivery, obstetrical history, birthweight and ratio of preterm delivery.Conclusion: The result of this study suggests that adolescent pregnancy is an important cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity, and there is a need to increase the attention of health professionals to appropriate management of adolescent pregnancies in order to reduce the health burden and to improve perinatal care of adolescents.
