Smoking cessation has been widely known as the right step to improve health. However, it has a low success rate. This research aims to identify demographic attributes (age, sex, income, and education), tobacco knowledge and spending and their impacts on smoking cessation intention and attempts in Kalidawir, Tulungagung Districts. A survey of 111 adult smokers is conducted using the GATS questionnaire. The data is analyzed using binary logistic regression. Most respondents, as many as 70 (63.1%), expressed a desire to quit smoking. Meanwhile, 41 respondents (36.9%) had no intention to quit smoking. Unfortunately, less than half, which is 43 (38.7%), had ever tried to quit smoking and more than half of the respondents, as many as 68 (61.3%), stated that they had never tried to quit smoking. Level of education and tobacco spending has a significant impact on intention to quit smoking (p-value 0,018 and p-value 0,024). While age, income, sex and knowledge do not affect the intention to quit smoking (p-value 0,954; p-value 0,145; p-value 0,975; and p-value 0,639). Education income and tobacco spending significantly impact the attempt to quit smoking (p-value 0,001; p-value 0,001 and p-value 0,008). While age, sex and knowledge do not affect the attempt to quit smoking (p-value 0,359; p-value 0,477; and p-value 0,993). Level of education and tobacco spending have significant impacts on intention and attempt to quit smoking while income only has an impact on smoking cessation attempts. The tobacco control program should consider these factors and make more comprehensive interventions.

Despite more than one-third of tobacco users attempting to quit tobacco each year, only 4–6 % of them succeed to remains abstinent after one year. The aim: This study aims to estimate the proportion of smokers who attempt to quit tobacco smoking and determine factors associated with quitting behaviour. Methods: This community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted among 720 smokers aged 18 years and above residing in a rural area of Haryana state of India. A chi-square test determined the association between various variables under study and quitting attempts among study subjects. Factors found to be statistically significant using a chi-square test were entered into a binary logistic regression analysis to obtain determinants of smoking quitting attempts among the respondents. Results: 28.5 % of the respondents had attempted to quit smoking during the past 1 year. The majority of them, i.e., 73.7 %, had attempted once, whereas 21.0 % and 5.4 % of respondents had made 2 and 3 attempts, respectively, to quit smoking during the last 1 year. Factors independently associated with quitting behaviour were educational level (AOR=1.851, p=0.028), age of initiation (AOR=0.620, p=0.026), reasons for smoking (AOR=1.681, p=0.016), money spent on smoking (AOR=1.700, p=0.003), family pressure to quit smoking (AOR=1.725, p=0.006) and advice from health professionals to quit smoking (AOR=2.104, p<0.001). Conclusion: Around one-third of smokers have attempted to quit tobacco smoking in the past year. Hence there is a need to formulate policies towards a targeted intervention for smokers who have not attempted to quit smoking in the past 1 year for effective tobacco control

ResumoAnalisar os fatores associados à cessação do tabagismo sem ajuda. Estudo transversal com pacientes de 18 anos ou mais dos ambulatórios de clínica médica do Hospital Universitário Júlio Müller, Cuiabá, Mato grosso, de maio a setembro de 2016 que responderam um questionário com informações sociodemográficas, estilo de vida, avaliação do estresse percebido, dependência à nicotina, triagem de alcoolismo e sobre os motivos que os levaram a parar de fumar. A análise dos dados foi realizada pelo SPSS 23. Dentre os 808 pacientes avaliados, 262 eram ex-fumantes e 90,1% pararam de fumar sem ajuda, sendo significativamente associado ao sexo masculino, baixa escolaridade, menor idade e menor tempo de tabagismo quando parou de fumar. Fatores associados à cessação sem ajuda: sexo masculino, baixa escolaridade, menor idade e tempo de tabagismo quando parou de fumar. Principais motivos: iniciativa própria, influência da família e religião. A crosssectional study was carried out with patients aged 18 years or more from the Medical Clinic Outpatient Clinics of the Júlio Müller University Hospital, Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, from May to September 2016, who answered a questionnaire with sociodemographic information, lifestyle, perceived stress assessment, Nicotine dependence, alcoholism screening and the reasons that led them to quit smoking. Data were analyzed by SPSS 23. Among the 808 patients evaluated, 262 were former smokers and 90.1% stopped smoking without help, being significantly associated with males, low schooling, lower age and shorter When he stopped smoking. Factors associated with unassisted cessation: male sex, low schooling, younger age and smoking time when smoking stopped. Main reasons: own initiative, influence of family and religion.
