Factors Associated with Motorcycle Risk Behavior among Thai University Students, Khon Kaen

Abstract: The aim of this research was to assess motorcycle risk behavior (MRB) among Thai students in Khon Kaen University. The research used a cross sectional study. Fifty Thai students recruited using purposive sample technique and the chi-square test was used to analyze relationship between characteristic associated with MRB. The most common MRB were making U-turn (38%), sometimes driving above the speed limit (36%), driving with more than two passanger (48%) and sometimes not wearing helmet (36%). The result showed… Show more

“…As far as we can tell, no sizable epidemiological studies have been conducted to elucidate the associations of environmental conditions with the severity of motorcycle crashes in university neighborhoods. Questionnaire-based research is commonly used to analyze motorcyclists’ behavior among university students and young drivers [ 11 , 12 , 43 ], while our study aimed to evaluate the association of environmental conditions with the injury severity caused by motorcycle crashes near the university. No study has clearly defined “university neighborhoods” for road safety; therefore, we considered areas with the most movement of university students, cited by several Taiwanese reports [ 26 , 27 ].…”

“…Motorcyclists in the urban area are more committed to violations than in the rural area [28]. Improving knowledge is an important factor in decreasing risky motorcycle driving behavior [29]. The behavior of motorcyclists causes a decrease in the performance of signalized intersections.…”

“…Road accidents involving a motorcyclist often leads to death. Road crashes are the leading cause of mortality for young people aged between 1 to 23 years old [3]. In this age group, teenagers and young adults are especially at risk of getting involved in road traffic accidents due to their risky driving behaviors on the road.…”

“…It is evident that protective equipment may reduce the number of deaths, although other factors related to the upward trend in motorcycle injury need to be determined. Furthermore, it was reported that the injury rate per 100 million vehicle miles travelled increased from 434 in 2013 to 459 in 2014 [3]. Therefore, preventive measures and clinical care should be focused on this group of road users to reduce the overall burden of road traffic injuries in Malaysia.…”
