Factors Associated with Mortality of Lambs Born to Ewe Hoggets

Abstract: The reproductive performance of ewe hoggets is poorer than that of mature-age ewes due to production of fewer lambs with poorer survival. Scant data are available on the risk factors for, and causes of, the mortality for lambs born to ewe hoggets, the impact of ewe deaths on lamb loss, and the causes of death for lambs born to ewe hoggets vs. mature-age ewes lambing in the same circumstances. In this study, 297 lambs born to 1142 ewe hoggets were necropsied along with 273 lambs born to 1050 mature-age ewes. Lo… Show more

“…It is possible to observe that for each additional kilo of lambs born per litter, there was an increase of 1.32 in the total amount of kilos of lambs weaned per litter. This result is related to a higher pre-weaning survival rate provided by the birth weight of the offspring, since lambs with higher birth weights have lower mortality rates (Ridler et al, 2022), which contributes to an increase in the number of animals that arrive alive at weaning and, consequently, a greater number of kilos of weaned lambs.…”

“…With a higher average gain, the animals are able to reach the selling weight faster and stay in the system for less time, which reduces production costs and increases profit. are dependent on the ewe's prolificacy rate, maternal nutrition and lambing order (Ridler et al, 2022). Wolfová et al (2011) found that birth weight had an absolute economic value of US$ 3.81 kg -1 ewe -1 and a relative economic value of 1.17% for Merinolandschaf sheep.…”

“…Ridler and others [ 143 ] reported that the greatest cause of death for lambs born to ewe lambs was stillbirth (~40%), followed by starvation exposure (26%) and dystocia (17%). They identified that low lamb birth weight, multiple litters, and increasing ewe lamb weight gain from breeding to late pregnancy were risk factors for both lamb mortality and stillbirth.…”

“…Ridler and others [ 143 ] noted that, over the lambing period, death of the ewe lamb accounted for 11% of lamb deaths. Their results also indicated the importance of monitoring ewe lambs over the lambing period to assist not only newborn lambs to ensure adequate survival rates, but also the young dam.…”
