Factors Associated with Asthma Control

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate which factors are associated with asthma control experienced by asthma patients. In a cross-sectional study patients aged 16-60 years with mild to moderate asthma were selected. The influence of the following factors on asthma control was studied in a multivariate model: age, gender, socioeconomic status, smoking, perceived hyperresponsiveness (PHR, responding with asthma symptoms to one or more triggers), allergy (Phadiatop), long-acting bronchodilating agents, and inhale… Show more

“…Many previous research have evaluated control in terms of symptomatology and requirement of medications but not QoL. Achievement of asthma control requires addressing many different factors that may influence it including sociodemographic characteristics, mood of the parent and child, medication adherence and many more (10,11). Therefore, it is important to assess different factors that may influence asthma control besides the treatment and the aim of this study was to evaluate the association between obesity and asthma control.…”

“…This requires the use of validated questionnaires for estimation of control since subjective evaluation of the physician may not be adequate (8,9). Moreover, many different factors including socioeconomic status, mood of the child and parent as well as treatments used may influence asthma control (10,11). Therefore, it is important to assess different factors that may influence asthma control to target them in the action plan of asthma treatment.…”

“…Preliminary analyses of demographic associations to asthma control indicated that age, gender, and household income were potentially important covariates for modeling asthma health for both ACQ variables did not account for statistically significant amounts of variance in ACQ and mini-AQOL (short form) age, gender, and income have been repeatedly identified in previous literature as important factors when examining self-management processes [26][27][28] ; so these variables were included in the primary multivariate models.…”

“…These factors can be categorized as physiological, environmental, and behavioral (6). A better insight into their influence on asthma control could be of help to determine more efficiently the preventive measures with the greatest impact on disease control (7).…”
