This systematic literature review (SLR) examines the evolution, effectiveness, and challenges associated with English for Specific Purposes (ESP) teaching materials, with a focus on their integration of digital technologies, learner-centered design, and cultural inclusivity. Through a comprehensive analysis guided by the PRISMA method, 87 studies from 2000 to 2023 were evaluated. The findings reveal a significant shift towards incorporating digital tools in ESP materials, highlighting the growing emphasis on creating immersive and interactive learning experiences. Additionally, the review underscores the importance of developing materials tailored to the learners' specific needs and cultural contexts, facilitating more meaningful engagement and language acquisition. Despite the observed benefits, challenges such as the necessity for ongoing teacher training and the absence of standardized evaluation frameworks for ESP materials were identified. Recommendations include enhancing digital integration, prioritizing learner-centered and culturally inclusive materials, investing in teacher training, developing evaluation frameworks, fostering collaborative material development, ensuring accessibility, and conducting longitudinal impact studies. This SLR sets a foundation for future research and development in ESP material design and implementation, aiming to support learners' language learning goals and professional aspirations effectively.

Virtual exchanges can be seen as a powerful tool in fostering digital- pedagogical, intercultural, and foreign language competences in teacher education. Since the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, virtual exchanges in teacher education have gained increasing attention both in research and practice. Despite a growing number of publications and various fields and themes covered by research and reports, few publications are concerned with connecting and systematising the discourse on virtual exchanges between 2020-2023. This paper, thus, aims to offer a comprehensive overview of how virtual exchanges are employed in teacher education by adopting a scoping study approach and examining research papers published in this period of time. Our findings cover the planning, implementation, and evaluation of virtual exchanges, as well as some overarching recommendations for improving the delivery of virtual exchanges in teacher education as they are provided in the research papers. Virtual exchanges in teacher education are a multifaceted field since it has multiple aims, usages, and impacts, which largely depend on the (mostly voluntary) work of teacher educators, the institutional framework within which the exchanges take place, and student teachers’ motivation to participate. The future of virtual exchanges in teacher education would benefit by opening up beyond foreign language teacher education and combining small-scale with large-scale studies to better inform research and practice.

Systematic literature review on the utilization of theoretical underpinnings in virtual exchange research

Virtual Exchange (VE) research is a subset of the technology enhanced learning field that has grown exponentially in the last decade. A critical step in the growth of an emerging academic field is to reflect on past research to understand what has been done well and what can be improved. This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) contributes to this reflective process by examining if a common criticism of technology enhanced learning research in Higher Education (HE) – the under-utilization of theoretical underpinnings in research – extends to the niche field of VE research. Using a qualitative meta-synthesis methodology, 42 qualitative and mixed method articles on VE were analyzed for theoretical underpinning usage, application, and advancement. Almost half of the articles explicitly used theoretical underpinnings in the conceptualization, data collection and analysis, and discussion of results. About a third of the articles explicitly used theoretical underpinnings in the design of the VE, but not necessarily in the research design. No articles reported adding to or advancing current theoretical underpinnings nor creating new ones. The results of this study show VE research is maturing but is not yet fully mature in the application of theoretical underpinnings in research. Also, this study contributes to analysis of theoretical underpinning usage by demonstrating that theoretical underpinnings are utilized also in course design, not just research design.
