The aim of the study is to evaluate and compare the soft tissue chin thickness values among adult patients with different vertical growth patterns. A sample size of 180 adults patients (32 males and 148 females), with an average age of 21.42 years (range 17-32 years), was selected. The sample was divided into three groups according to the vertical growth pattern using SNMP angle (hypodivergent <27°, normodivergent 27-37° and hyperdivergent >37°). The soft tissue chin thicknesses in each group were measured at pogonion (Pog), gnathion (Gn), and menton (Me) and analyzed using the one-way analysis of variance and post-hoc Tukey test. The soft tissue chin thickness values were greater in hypodivergent group at Pog (12.71±2.10 mm), Gn (9.72 ± 2.55 mm) and Me (9.13 ± 2.88 mm) and smallest in hyperdivergent group (Pog 8.05 ±1.20 mm, Gn 6.07±1.47 mm, Me 5.91±1.21 mm). The soft tissue chin thicknesses were greater in men than women. Soft tissue chin thickness was greater in hypodivergent adults than those of normodivergent and hyperdivergent adults. In all the three groups, soft tissue thickness values were greater in men than women.

Objetivo: este estudo cefalométrico longitudinal visou avaliar, comparativamente, as alterações das alturas faciais, provenientes do tratamento da má oclusão de Classe II, 1ª divisão de Angle, pela Técnica de "Edgewise", associado à ancoragem extrabucal cervical, com e sem extração de quatro primeiros pré-molares. Metodologia: a amostra constituiu-se de 116 telerradiografias em norma lateral obtidas de 56 jovens, de ambos os gêneros. Destes jovens, 22 foram tratados ortodonticamente com extração de quatro primeiros pré-molares e apresentavam idade média inicial de 12,30 e final de 14,87 anos, constituindo o grupo I. Outros 22 foram tratados ortodonticamente sem extração e apresentavam idade média inicial de 12,53 e idade média final de 14,73 anos, formando o grupo II. Os demais 14 jovens com idade média inicial de 11,50 e final de 13,63 anos, não foram submetidos a nenhuma intervenção ortodôntica, formando assim o grupo controle (grupo III). Resultados e Conclusões: os resultados demonstraram que não houve influência significante da terapia ortodôntica sobre as alterações das alturas faciais. Os primeiros molares superiores e inferiores desenvolveram-se no sentido vertical nos três grupos. As alterações horizontais dentoalveolares evidenciaram uma mesialização dos primeiros molares superiores e inferiores em todos os grupos, contudo o maior deslocamento para mesial ocorreu no grupo tratado com extração de quatro primeiros pré-molares e no grupo controle. Este fato prova que, no grupo tratado sem extração, a Classe II foi corrigida não pela distalização dos primeiros molares superiores, mas pela restrição da mesialização dos mesmos. Objective: This study aimed to classify and determine the prevalence of individuals with vertical alteration of facial relationships, according to the severity of discrepancy, especially individuals with long face pattern. Methods: The sample was composed of 5,020 individuals of Brazilian nationality, of both genders, aged 10 years to 16 years and 11 months, attending middle schools at the city of Bauru-SP, Brazil. Examination of facial morphology comprised direct observation of the face in frontal and lateral views, always with the lip at rest, aiming to identify individuals presenting vertical alteration of facial relationships. After identification, these individuals were scored, according to severity, into three subtypes, namely mild, moderate and severe. The prevalence of individuals with long face pattern considered only the individuals scored as subtypes moderate and severe. Results: There was prevalence of 34.94% of vertical alteration of facial relationships and 14.06% of long face pattern. Conclusions: The results obtained in this study revealed that the prevalence of vertical alteration of facial relationships and long face pattern was higher than that reported in the literature.
