Facets of impulsivity and alcohol use: What role do emotions play?

Abstract: Highlights: • Increased temporal and motor impulsivity seem to predispose to alcohol use. • Heightened motor impulsivity is also an effect of alcohol use. • Brain regions of impulsive behaviours and emotional experiences overlap • Highly impulsive individuals use alcohol to deal with negative emotional states. • Poor interoceptive abilities may further encourage drinking as a coping mechanism.

“…Regarding alcohol-associated cues, previous studies described increased cue related activity in the insula, striatum, the amygdala and frontal regions such as the ACC, medial PFC or OFC (Bach et al, 2020;Goldstein & Volkow, 2002;Heinz, Beck, Grusser, Grace, & Wrase, 2009;Vollstädt-Klein et al, 2012;Vollstädt-Klein et al, 2010). Our results suggest that salience attribution and cue-reactivity in response to alcohol cues is Further examination is needed to determine whether depleted cognitive resources might underlie this increased cue reactivity, as the current study did not reveal a significant negative correlation between prefrontal activity and ADHD severity.…”

“…A recent review highlighted the need to delve into emotional regulation and the moderating role of impulsivity in alcohol consumption [7]. Likewise, the evidence of differences in the pattern of neural activation between individuals with high risk of resilient alcoholism and those who are vulnerable concerning the mechanisms of emotional regulation has sparked interest in the identification of markers of resilience in alcohol addiction [8,9].…”

“…Recently, it has also been suggested that impulsive traits associated with antisocial behavior compromise the development of empathy (see Massey et al, 2018 ); this suggestion has yet to be confirmed. A recent review highlights the interrelationship between emotional processing, affective states and impulsivity ( Herman and Duka 2018 ). These ideas further motivated us to include measurements of impulsivity within the current study; trait impulsivity ratings were taken to test the relationship between predicted changes in brain activation related to empathy in binge drinkers and their impulsivity ratings.…”
