Differential brain responses for perception of pain during empathic response in binge drinkers compared to non-binge drinkers

Abstract: Highlights We measure empathic responses to imagery pain while adopting a ‘self’ vs ‘other’ perspective. Social drinkers who binge drink respond more slowly to imagery pain than those who do not. Binge drinkers show also stronger activation in fusiform body area to imagery pain ‘other’ Differences between binge and non-binge drinkers relate to ‘self’ vs. ‘other’ distinction.

“…Cross-sectional studies indicate that drinkers produced lower activation in the middle frontal gyrus while decoding vocal affective bursts (P. Maurage et al, 2013) and in the fusiform gyrus when perceiving others' pain (Rae et al, 2020), with implications for impairments in emotion recognition and empathy. Longitudinal studies support the observation of reduced activations in frontal and striatal networks during inhibition among adolescents with a history of binge drinking over 3 years (Norman et al, 2011;Wetherill et al, 2013).…”

“…This score was calculated for all participants on the basis of the information provided regarding core characteristics of BD: consumption speed (average drinks per hour), drunkenness episodes (number of times being drunk in the previous 6 months) and the drunkenness ratio (percentage of times getting drunk when drinking). The AUQ-R binge score is a validated and widely used method for exploring binge drinking (e.g., Czapla et al, 2015;Rae et al, 2020;Townshend & Duka, 2005;Townshend et al, 2014).…”

“…(2017b) , with participants divided into three groups (non-responders, S/L and A/G), and in which they were asked to rate their own vicarious pain response to seeing painful and non-painful images. Dataset 2 uses a sample of students from Rae et al . (2020) who we would assume would be primarily non-responders.…”
