Fabrication of Zn-Sr–doped laser-spinning glass nanofibers with antibacterial properties

Abstract: The morphology and dimensions of bioactive materials are essential attributes to promote tissue culture. Bioactive materials with nanofibrous structure have excellent potential to be used as bone-defect fillers, since they mimic the collagen in the extracellular matrix. On the other hand, bioactive glasses with applications in regenerative medicine may present antibacterial properties, which depend on glass composition, concentration and the microorganisms tested. Likewise, their morphology may influence their… Show more

“…Sodium alginate was obtained from Fisher Scientific Ltd (Leicestershire, UK), while calcium chloride and sodium lauryl sulphate were obtained from Sigma-Aldrich Ltd (Gillingham, UK). ICIE16M glass powder, which is a modification of ICIE16 (see Table 1), was synthesized as in previous protocols [52,53,54]. Compositions for ICIE16 and ICIE16M are given in Table 1.…”

“…The composite is made by combining an alginate with strontium (Sr) and zinc (Zn) containing bioactive glass ICIE16M. The ICIE16M is modified from ICIE16 [52,53]. The glass ICIE16 has bioactivity comparable to 45S5, but large sintering window.…”

“…In the paper of Jones, the author nicely describes Bioglass ® history from its discovery, Bioglass ® advantages, the material’s osteoconduction and osteoinduction properties, and introduces new bioglass composite hybrid materials. Composites with increased stiffness and mechanical properties are obtained by blending bioglass particles with biodegradable polymers such as the well-known PLA, polyglycolic acid (PGA), PLGA, and PCL, whose characteristics are reported in Section 2.2 [ 64 , 65 , 66 , 67 , 68 , 69 ].…”
