Extraction of α-cellulose from Eleocharis dulcis Holocellulose using NaOH and KOH

Abstract: Cellulose is the greatest abundant and renewable biopolymer resources in world, it has been widely used in many industrial applications because of its favorable characteristics. Various cellulose resources, especially those obtained from local resources and agriculture waste, are being exploited to reduce the impact of environmental damage. This study presents an environmental friendly methods to produce cellulose from local plant, Eleocharis dulcis. E. dulcis is an aquatics plant belonging to the Cyperaceae f… Show more

“…According to Sumiati (Sumiati et al, 2016), higher HCl concentration in the hydrolysis process will remove not only amorphous phase, but also crystalline part of cellulose. This result also similar with the result from previous research (Sunardi et al, 2019). Also, there is an increase in glucose monomer formation, leading to improved dissolution in the washing process.…”

“…This can be justified by the fact that the main components of the curaua fiber (lignin, hemicellulose, and cellulose) present different reactivities in response to alkaline treatments. As a base, KOH acts to solubilize hemicellulose, enabling its extraction [ 25 ]. However, the higher than expected product yield suggests that additional components were also removed.…”

“…Holoselulosa menjadi bahan yang mendapatkan perhatian karena merupakan bahan baku yang digunakan untuk menghasilkan pulp dan kertas (Ramawat and Ahuja, 2016), holoselulosa nanofibril (Park et al, 2017), selulosa alfa (Sunardia et al, 2019), biokomposit (Yang et al, 2019), bioetanol (Vaz et al, 2016), aerogel (Huang et al, 2020).…”
