In this article, the physical and chemical properties of pulverized, vinegar treated waste from fish scale remains of fish from Lake Ngami in Sehitwa near Maun, Botswana, were investigated for a possibility of being employed as an environmentally friendly and cheap sorbent material for reducing or removing excess, toxic, heavy metal ions from wastewater before different uses. Lead (II) and Zinc (II) ions were selected as model ions to demonstrate the potential of fish scale waste remains in removing excess toxic heavy metal ions. The pulverized size of the waste was found to be 60 µm, with round and smooth morphology, which are excellent characteristics usually associated with superior sorbents. Furthermore, the fourier transform infrared spectrometer spectrum showed multiple functional groups such as amines, carboxylic, hydroxyl, and carbonyls which are well known to bond well with metals through hydrogen and oxygen bonding. The X-ray diffractogram of the fish scales showed the presence of hydroxyapatite, which has an excellent ion-exchange performance, which exchanges calcium ion site with metals. Multivariate methodologies statistical software, Minitab, were employed for the simultaneous optimization factors that affect sorption studies; initial ions concentration which was found to be 24.45 mg/L, the sorbents dose which was found to be 76.99 mg/L, contact time, which were found to be 62.37 min and solution pH 7.52. The fish scales waste also exhibited high percentage removal efficiencies toward Lead (II) and Zinc (II) removal from real wastewater samples at 81.97% and 80.37% with percentage relative standard deviation of 1.34% and 1.02% respectively.

Isolation of chitin and chitosan from natural sources are widely known as they can be used in many applications. Extraction of chitin and chitosan are carried out in exoskeleton of flower crab, Portunus pelagicus. Chemical treatments such as demineralization and deproteinzation processes are used for chitin extraction, and followed by deacetylation process of chitin, which is to produce its derivatives that known as chitosan. Characterization of chitin and chitosan has been done using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), CHNS elemental analysis and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Preliminary results of FTIR vibrations patterns showed stretching of hydroxyl (O-H), amine (N-H) and carbonyl (C-O) groups indicated the presence of chitin and chitosan. XRD analysis indicates the crystalline nature of chitin and chitosan. The degree of deacetylation of chitin was characterized using CHNS elemental analyzer. The extracted chitosan will be used as reducing agent for silver nanoparticles synthesis in the future studies.Keywords: crustacean, marine invertebrates, bio-polymers, natural reductant Abstrak Pengasingan kitin dan kitosan daripada sumber semulajadi telah dikenali secara meluas kerana dapat digunakan dalam banyak aplikasi. Pengekstrakan kitin dan kitosan dari exoskeleton ketam bunga, Portunus pelagicus telah dilakukan. Rawatan kimia seperti proses demineralisasi dan proses deprotenisasi telah digunakan untuk pengekstrakan kitin dan diikuti dengan proses deasetilasi daripada ktin untuk penghasilan terbitannya yang dikenali sebagai kitosan. Pencirian kitin dan kitosan telah dilakukan dengan menggunakan Spektoskopi Inframerah Transformasi Fourier (FTIR), pembelauan Sinar X (XRD), analisis unsur CHNS dan analisis termogravimetri (TGA). Dapatan awal getaran FTIR menunjukkan regangan bagi kumpulan hidroksil (O-H), amino (N-H) dan karbonil (C-O) menunjukan kehadiran sebatian kitin dan kitosan. Analisis XRD menunjukkan sifat kristal bagi kitin dan kitosan. Pencirian darjah deasetilasi kitin telah dilakukan menggunakan penganalisis unsur CHNS. Ekstrak kitosan akan digunakan sebagai agen penurun bagi sintesis nanopartikel perak untuk kajian masa hadapan.Kata kunci: krustasea, invertebrata marin, bio-polimer, penurun semulajadi. Optimization of shrimp shell waste deacetylation for chitosan production

Chitosan, a versatile natural polymer is an amino polysaccharide prepared by processing shrimp shell waste which involved deacetylation of chitin. To obtain high degree of deacetylation (DDA), several parameters should be performed during alkaline treatment. The present study was undertaken at different time of soaking treatment (once and twice) and temperature (60 o C and 80 o C) to optimize the deacetylation process to produce chitosan with high solubility and degree of deacetylation. It was observed that the highest solubility and degree of deacetylation were obtained when deacetylation process was repeated twice and temperature of 80 o C, with 99.48% and 97.63%, respectively. It can be concluded that by repeating the deacetylation twice with the support of heating treatment, a better quality of chitosan with higher solubility and degree of deacetylation can be produced.
