Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase CTX-M-1 in Escherichia coli Isolates from Healthy Poultry in France

Abstract: Genes encoding extended-spectrum ␤-lactamase CTX-M-1 were detected in 12 Escherichia coli isolates recovered over a 7-month period from the ceca of healthy poultry in seven districts in France in 2005. Eleven of those strains were not clonally related and had a bla CTX-M-1 gene located on transferable plasmids of different sizes and structures.

“…The genes coding CTX-M group β-lactamase are harbored by plasmids as IS Ecp1. After determining the presence and transmitting by conjugation of ESBL type CTX-M groups in healthy foodproducing animals, this issue has become increasingly important (12,17).…”

“…Failure of conjugation in the present study may be because of the small size plasmids carried by the donors. It is suggestive to study the involvements of the insertion sequence ISEcp1 [37,38], as well as assessment of the incompatibility group [39,40] of the plasmid may help to understand the failure.…”

“…This may result in a selective advantage and a consequent increase in the abundance of resistant bacteria in animals, their wastes and surrounding environment [5]. Antibiotic resistant bacteria have been detected in poultry waste [7,8,6,9], commercial poultry production environments [10,11] and poultry products [12,13].…”
