Expression of steroidogenic enzymes in human sebaceous glands

Abstract: Androgens are well known to influence sebum synthesis and secretion. Various factors related to androgen biosynthesis are expressed in human sebaceous glands. In this study, immunohistochemical analysis of human skin specimens from 43 subjects indicated that various androgen-producing and -metabolizing enzymes were functionally localized to sebocytes accumulating lipid droplets and that the exclusive expression of 17b-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (17b-HSD2 (HSD17B2)) in sebaceous glands was negatively c… Show more

“…In human sebaceous glands (SGs), PPARs are expressed mostly in basal and early differentiated sebocytes, with decreased expression with terminal sebaceous differentiation . There is increased expression of PPAR γ in sebocytes during puberty . PPAR γ is also abundantly expressed in skin adipocytes and plays a critical role in adipocyte differentiation .…”

“…Increased HSD17B2 mRNA expression was associated with decreased testosterone levels in SZ95 immortalized sebocytes (30). While inactivation of testosterone via increased HSD17B2 lead to hypoandrogenic milieu, simultaneous effect of HSD17B2 on estradiol inactivation may counteract this hypoandrogenic situation.…”
