Expression of blood group antigens A, B and H in carcinoma tissue correlates with a poor prognosis for colorectal cancer patients

Abstract: The deletion of blood group ABH isoantigens on tumor tissues has been reported to be an adverse prognostic marker for patients with various solid tumors. In the present study, we evaluated the prognostic value of altered expression of ABH isoantigens in colorectal carcinomas. Using monoclonal antibodies, the expression of A, B, and H antigens was assessed by immunohistochemistry on paraffin-embedded carcinoma samples from 82 patients who had undergone surgery for colorectal cancer. ABH isoantigens were found t… Show more

“…Furthermore this finding is also reported in some other studies consist of Iodice et al [33]. It seems that there is a common consent among previous studies that the risk of breast cancer incidence in blood type AB is less than other blood groups of ABO system [3,34]. The reasons of different assessment risk between ABO blood groups and breast cancer are different frequency ABO blood group between two populations, importance of case and comparative control and determining way of ABO blood groups [27].…”

“…Although the prognostic significance of loss of, or altered expression of, blood group ABH isoantigens has been suggested for carcinomas at a variety of sites including colon, lung, urinary bladder, uterine cervix, and head and neck (Dabelsteen 1996;Nakagoe et al 2000b), any prognostic value of expression of these antigens in breast cancer patients has not been determined (Dabelsteen 1996;Lee et al 1985). Lee et al (Lee et al 1985) reported that ABH isoantigen status bears no significant relationship to clinical and pathological parameters and does not serve as a useful prognostic factor in breast cancer patients.…”

“…Many reports have shown that blood group antigen expression in tumor is correlated with metastasis [33,34] and prognosis [35,36] . The loss or presence of blood group antigens can increase cellular motility or facilitate the interaction between tumor cells and the endothelium of distant organs [37,38] .…”
