Expression of ABH/Lewis-related antigens as prognostic factors in patients with breast cancer

Abstract: Thus, expression of sialyl Le(x) antigen in tumor cells is associated with poor prognosis in patients with breast cancer and must be considered in the design of future therapeutic trials.

“…Furthermore, the adhesion of tumor cells via sLe a and sLe x to vascular endothelial cells may facilitate hematogenous metastasis [33]. Although several studies have demonstrated a prognostic value for the AB0 blood group antigens in various malignancies, the results of these studies are inconsistent suggesting that the biological role of ABH antigens may be disease-specific [37-40]. Experimental data on murine colon cancer cells suggest the expression of blood group antigens A and B to mediate the resistance to apoptosis which may facilitate the escape from immune surveillance [41].…”

“…The expression of sialyl-Lewis antigens is weak in carcinoma in situ , is moderate in invasive carcinomas without metastases and is high in primary carcinoma with lymph node metastases, showing a good correlation with the metastatic risk in breast cancer patients [70]. Immunohistochemistry of breast cancer tissue suggests that sLe x expression is an independent prognostic indicator of survival regardless of the size of the primary tumour and lymph node involvement [71]. …”

“…When found at the surface of carcinoma cells, they are usually associated with a poor prognosis in tumors of certain type, stage and grade, and reduced overall survival [98,139]. The expression of sLe x in breast cancers is also considered to be an independent prognostic indicator of survival regardless of the primary tumor and lymph node involvement [141]. Elevated sLe x expression was found in patients with metastases compared to those without [136], and sLe x was increased in serum of patients with advanced breast cancer [135,136].…”
