Exploring variables associated with medication non-adherence in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract: Objective This study aims to assess medication adherence and explore its predictors in outpatients with type 2 diabetes. Method This cross-sectional study collected socio-demographics, disease-related information, and different biomedical variables for type 2 diabetes patients attending a Jordanian Diabetes center. “…A study in Swedish patients with stroke revealed that nonadherent patients showed less common positive beliefs and more common negative beliefs toward their medications [30]. Furthermore, similar results were also reported when evaluating the association between beliefs about medications and adherence in specific populations, including diabetes mellitus [31], hypertension [32] and dyslipidemia [33].…”

“…Similar to the other parts of the globe, the issue of non- adherence to medications in Jordanian chronically ill patients is challenging. Reported prevalence of non-adherence to medications ranged from 29.6%-64.2% in different clinical settings [ 7 , 8 , 11 , 12 ]. More specifically, adherence to medications in diseases like hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus were reported to be 81%, 73.2% and 58.7%, respectively [ 8 , 9 , 13 ].…”

More specifically, adherence to medications in diseases like hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus were reported to be 81%, 73.2% and 58.7%, respectively [ 8 , 9 , 13 ]. Studies showed that low level of adherence is associated with several factors, such as patient, disease, and medication-related factors [ 14 ].…”
