Exploring the Formation of Black Phosphorus Intercalation Compounds with Alkali Metals

Abstract: Black phosphorus intercalation compounds (BPICs) with alkali metals (namely: K and Na) have been synthesized in bulk by solid‐state as well as vapor‐phase reactions. By means of a combination of in situ X‐ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and DFT calculations the structural behavior of the BPICs at different intercalation stages has been demonstrated for the first time. Our results provide a glimpse into the very first steps of a new family of intercalation compounds, with a distinct behavior as compared to… Show more

“…The atom size of Cu ( r Cu ~ 0.14 nm) is smaller than the interlayer distance (0.52 nm) of BP flakes and larger than “pore” size (<0.1 nm) of BP plane, which suggests that the Cu atoms are intercalated between the BP layers . We deduce that the Cu intercalation begins at the edge sites or surface defects of the BP flake during the metal evaporation when the high energy and highly diffusive evaporated Cu atoms facilitate the intercalation process . The intercalated Cu atoms propagate along the interlayer between BP planes, which results in BP with interstitial Cu (Cu int ) between BP layers.…”

“…Afterwards, the mixture was heated up to 70 °C, where it was carefully mixed together. The detailed process of synthesis is described in a previous article . For the experiments, 10.1 and 10.3 mg of bP and KP 8 was put into ESR grade quartz tubes, evacuated to high vacuum (2×106 mbar) and sealed under 20 mbar of He (6.0 Helium), which allowed cryogenic measurements.…”
