Exploring Configuration of Mixed Reality Spaces for Communication

Abstract: Mixed Reality (MR) enables users to explore a wonderland which is not realizable in the physical world. This provides users with the chance to communicate in many different ways. We present our MR multi-user workstation system to investigate how different configurations of participants and content affect communication between people in the same immersive environment. We implemented mirrored face-to-face communication, side-by-side communication and eyes-free communication by using the presentation tool Chalkta… Show more

“…The application of the metaverse is already being carried out as highlighted by works in the literature, such as in [38], wherein the metaverse was applied together with VR in teaching; in [39], wherein the authors addressed the collaboration of personnel in 3D virtual environments; and in [4], wherein a mixed-reality approach in communication spaces was explored. As for framework proposals, VR experiences in VR and metaverse were introduced in [40][41][42][43].…”

“…Computer-generated virtual world is a space where users can interact with objects in an immersive way, freely explore all spaces, socialize with audio and speech with groups of people connected in the same session as if they were in the real world [3]. Virtual reality (VR) can also display complex content or useful data innovatively, regardless of the limitations of our physical reality [4]. Such an environment has the potential to elevate collaboration, communication, and learning to a higher level of quality compared to traditional technologies such as 2D display.…”

“…For example, the high-performance graphics card renders complex 3D graphics in real-time, and the virtual reality technology provides users with an immersive experience [40,41]. We can build a three-dimensional virtual scene with HMD [2,42,43], and then create a whiteboard in it [44,45]. Moreover, there is a controller that can be used as an input device to provide a natural writing experience [46,47].…”

“…The two seating positions tested were selected to model various settings where people sit around a table or share the same perspective with respect to physical artifacts. Similar settings have been studied in prior CSCW works concerning the spatial arrangements of remote communication systems or tabletop interfaces (Yamashita et al, 1999;Tang et al, 2010;He et al, 2019). In each condition, the participant pair needed to complete a set of 20 trials (one trial for each of the 16 targets, plus four additional trials as decoys to prevent participants from predicting remaining targets).…”
