Experimental Treatment of Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis of Brook Trout with Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Iodine

Abstract: Variations in growth rates of Dover sole (Microstomus pacificus) off Astoria and Brookings, and of English sole (Parophrys vetulus) off Astoria and Coos Bay, Oregon were studied by means of increments between annuli on scales and interoperculum bones for Dover and English sole, respectively. Age‐specific growth rates of both species were statistically different among years. The maximum variation for Dover sole was 19% of the mean growth rate for the period 1958–1975. English sole growth varied as much as 17% f… Show more

“…One of the first antiviral compounds used in aquaculture was poly(vinylpyrrolidone)-iodine (PVP-I), which is a broad-spectrum antiseptic that blocks viral attachment to cellular receptors and also inhibits viral release and spread from infected cells (Sriwilaijaroen et al 2009). Economon (1963Economon ( , 1973 observed a reduction in the morbidity and mortality caused by IPNV in brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) when the animals were fed PVP-I. Iodine added at low concentrations to the water was also effective in the prevention of IHNV infection in rainbow trout (Batts et al 1991), and different studies have reported the properties of iodine complexes that destroy fish viruses, such as IHNV, IPNV and VHSV (Amend & Pietsch 1972;Elliott & Amend 1978).…”
